Design and instruction in mechanical engineering topics and CAD projects as a student and intern.
Seeking an entry-level or internship role in mechanical engineering with CAD and manufacturing skills, not a senior electrical engineering position.
## Overview Brookhaven National Laboratory's Modernization Project Office (MPO) is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join a team that designs, constructs, and updates the physical BNL plant so world-class research can be performed. Review more information at BNL Benefits Program. This role will have you working on diverse commercial and institutional building application projects from concept to completion, applying technical skill, creativity, and a passion for sustainable design. ### Day-to-day and impact In this role you will perform calculations to validate added loads to existing electrical service and/or distribution, and coordinate overcurrent protection and equipment sizing to comply with NEC. You will lay out and design electrical equipment including, but not limited to, normal and emergency switchboards/switchgears, motor control centers, distribution and branch panel boards, disconnect switches, motor starters/VFDs, and similar devices. You will develop design documents, specifications, and detailed risers, and prepare and/or review detailed cost estimates and contracts. Construction support is part of the work: expect to review shop drawing submittals, prepare Request for Information (RFI) responses, and conduct site visits before and during construction to identify issues and recommend field modifications based on site conditions. Project management duties include validating project scope, tracking project budget and milestones, managing design project budgets and updating them to reflect revisions or changes in scope, and ensuring procedural documentation is completed and recorded. You will also mentor and review designs by junior electrical engineers to ensure designs are efficient, code compliant, and adhere to BNL design standards/guidelines. Continuous professional development and maintaining a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness are expected. ### Skills, tools, and technical expectations Candidates must have: a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited University or College and at least ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in electrical systems design. Broad knowledge of building electrical systems is required, including grounding, lighting, lighting controls, and fire alarm systems. Detailed knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC - NFPA 70) and other NFPA codes relevant to power systems and fire alarm is required, along with knowledge in the preparation of specifications for selection and installation of power distribution equipment. Experience preparing load calculations, short-circuit availability, arc flash mitigation, motor-starting, and other electrical power distribution and lighting calculations is required to support design projects. You should be able to develop electrical construction bid documents including single line and three-line drawings, relaying schematics, equipment layouts, underground distribution duct banks, equipment schedules, conduit routing, distribution, motor control schemes, lighting and lighting controls, and fire alarm. Proficiency in Auto. CAD to produce design drawings and sketches is required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point). Preferred skills include proficiency in Revit, and familiarity with SKM, Lumen, or other industry-recognized software to support calculations. Knowledge of medium voltage distribution and transmission, and development of low voltage design documents (telecom, security, AV) are listed as preferred. ### Additional distinctions and requirements Preferred candidates may have a minimum of fifteen (15) years progressively responsible related work experience including demonstrated outstanding abilities in engineering leadership. Candidates are expected to have at least five (5) years as an Engineer I or equivalent. Advanced degree (e.g., Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering) and PMP certification are noted as preferred. A professional engineering license in New York State is listed among preferred qualifications. Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full annual salary range for this position is $129850 - $249200. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.
