# Mechanical Design Engineer — Utilities Company: Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC / Brookhaven National Laboratory Location: Onsite at BNL (building 749) Salary range: $113,050 - $190,883 / year (placement commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience) Brookhaven National Laboratory is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer who reports to the Energy & Utilities Energy Manager. This role supports the Energy & Utilities (EU) Division within the Facilities & Operations Directorate and provides design engineering and operations support across BNL utilities, including the Central Steam Facility, Steam Distribution System, and Central Chilled Water Facility. ## Key Responsibilities - Provide engineering, design, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operations and upgrades of plant mechanical equipment and systems. - Contribute to Utility Master Planning and maintain a ready-to-execute queue of mechanical improvement projects with design documents and contract bid packages. - Maintain and update as-built drawings for configuration management. - Provide engineering support during construction, startup, and commissioning; perform field inspections; review change requests; and support outage planning. - Evaluate plant equipment operations and life-cycle status to support planning for operational improvements and capital replacement. - Coordinate with controls engineers to integrate mechanical systems into the site Energy Management and Control System (EMCS), including review of sequences of operation, control points, and alarm strategies. - Estimate materials, costs, and staffing requirements for projects. - Supervise service and maintenance contractors as needed and approve invoices for payment. ## Required Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited university or college. - Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in the design or commissioning of central chilled water facilities, central steam facilities, and steam distribution systems. - Understanding of heat loss/gain calculations, equipment selection, piping design, and pump design. - Strong understanding of at least one area of plant utility operations and maintenance, such as: - Chillers, cooling towers, thermal energy storage tanks, air compressors - High-pressure steam boilers, deaerators, boiler feedwater pumps - Steam distribution including pressure regulating valves, steam manholes, and steam expansion loop design - Design of hydronic pumping systems and underground utility systems - Proficiency in design calculation software and the preparation of calculations, reports, specifications, and presentations; experience reviewing shop drawings and submittals. - Knowledge of New York State building codes and ASHRAE standards. - Working knowledge of computers and software applications (Microsoft Office) and the ability to use AutoCAD to produce design drawings and sketches. - Ability to read and interpret underground utility drawings, P&ID drawings, architectural and mechanical drawings, and oversee commissioning activities. - Strong decision-making, teamwork, and communication skills; must be able to read, write, and verbally communicate in English. - Valid New York State driver’s license. ## Preferred Qualifications - Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. - Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible design and/or commissioning experience with central chilled water facilities, central steam facilities, and steam distribution systems. - Familiarity with Trane centrifugal water-cooled chillers; Kobelco/Scales oil-free and reciprocating air compressors; various refrigerants and monitoring systems; water tube steam boiler design and operations; and high-pressure steam distribution systems. - Knowledge of ASHRAE 15-2016 (Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems). - Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status in New York State. ## Physical / Environmental Requirements - Standing, bending, and lifting up to 20 lbs. - Ability to work in confined spaces. - Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders and work at heights up to 20 feet. - Use of personal protective equipment. - Work outdoors in cold environments and indoors in hot environments. - Domestic travel may be required occasionally for training; use of a private car may be required at times. ## Additional Information - This is an onsite position located at BNL. - Brookhaven National Laboratory requires all non-badged personnel, including visitors, to produce a REAL ID or REAL ID-compliant documentation to access the Laboratory.
