Position Summary The GIS Technical Lead is responsible for the development, maintenance, analysis, and visualization of geospatial data to support organizational decision-making, planning, and operations. This role applies geographic information systems (GIS) technology to collect, manage, analyze, and present spatial and non-spatial data in support of projects across departments. The GIS Technical Lead collaborates with internal stakeholders, project managers, and technical teams to deliver accurate, high-quality mapping products and spatial analysis that drive strategic and operational outcomes. This role will be a sole practitioner externally supporting our partner firms with federal government task order projects and, if needed, will internally provide support for our consulting project teams. This will require this individual to take initiative on what they can and research or ask for help if tasks are beyond their scope. Develop, maintain, and manage geospatial databases and data layers. Perform spatial analysis, geoprocessing, and data modeling using GIS software. Create high-quality maps, dashboards, web applications, and visualizations for internal and external stakeholders. Collect, clean, validate, and integrate spatial and attribute data from multiple sources. Conduct field data collection and GPS data integration as required. Support project teams by providing spatial insights, analysis reports, and technical recommendations. Maintain metadata and ensure compliance with data governance standards. Develop and maintain GIS documentation, workflows, and standard operating procedures. Provide technical support and training to end users of GIS applications. Collaborate with IT teams to support GIS server environments, web services, and enterprise systems. Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and security. Stay current on emerging GIS technologies, tools, and industry best practices. Education, Experience, and Technical Skills Required Education, Experience, and Technical Skills Bachelor’s degree in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), geospatial science, environmental science, urban planning, engineering, or a related field. 5+ years of professional experience using GIS software (e.g., Esri ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS). Experience performing spatial analysis and managing geodatabases. Experience with Python, ModelBuilder, SQL, or other scripting/automation tools. Familiarity with enterprise GIS environments and ArcGIS Server. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data management skills. Ability to interpret technical documents, maps, and plans. Must be self-motivated/self-directed as this is the only GIS role within the organization. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Real ID or Passport in order to undergo commercial airfare travel Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license Preferred Education, Experience, and Technical Skills Master’s degree in GIS or related field. GIS Professional (GISP) certification. Experience with web GIS applications and dashboards. Experience integrating GIS with CAD, BIM, or asset management systems. Experience working in government, utilities, engineering, environmental consulting, or infrastructure sectors. Knowledge of remote sensing, drone data, or LiDAR processing. Working Environment This position primarily operates in a professional office setting or home office with standard office equipment and a quiet, climate-controlled environment. While in the office, there is no regular exposure to loud noise, hazardous materials, or heavy machinery. This role also requires periodic travel to project sites, including locations undergoing renovation or active construction. During site visits, the employee may be exposed to non-temperature-controlled environments, construction noise, dust, and other typical conditions found on job sites. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required during these visits, depending on site conditions. While on site visits, an individual in this role will likely be required to work atypical hours at the request of the client or project demands. Physical Demands Sitting/Standing: This is a sedentary role most of the time. However, during field work this role requires the ability to be on your feet moving around a field location for most of the day. Walking: This role requires the ability to move about outside in various geographic and building terrains to do field work. Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: This role may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ladder climbing as part of field work / verification activities. Using Hands/Fingers: This role constantly operates technological office equipment such as laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, and scanners, copiers, and fax machines. Talking/Hearing: This role requires constant communication with others in the organization to exchange information, review information, and make decisions about information. Seeing: This role requires the ability to see, view, and distinguish all aspects of construction to ensure quality control. Carrying/Lifting: This role requires lifting up to 30 lbs to transport technological office equipment, safety equipment, and other needed construction items to and from various workspaces.
