We are a bird-focused conservation organization that combines innovative conservation, education, and community engagement programs with activities that build community and foster the joy of birding. Position Summary The Board of Directors is seeking to fill the full-time position of Executive Director to lead the strategic implementation of Birds Georgia's mission, vision, and goals. The Executive Director provides overall leadership and strategic direction while also managing staff and day-to-day operations. Key responsibilities will include fundraising, financial management of a roughly $2 million annual budget, staff supervision, and representing the organization to external stakeholders. The ED will work with others to develop and implement the organization's strategic plan, ensuring its financial stability and effective program implementation. This person will work closely with the Board of Directors and serve as the public face of the organization. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in management and in developing and refining processes and budgets. We are seeking a candidate with an outstanding track record in fundraising, donor stewardship, with top-notch communications skills, an attention to detail, and the ability to share the vision of Birds Georgia. The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors for ensuring material progress on financial stewardship, implementation of strategic plan, and fostering a healthy organizational culture. Strategic Responsibilities • Ensure the long-term viability of the organization through successful fundraising and donor stewardship, in cooperation with the Board and staff, to meet the financial and strategic needs of the organization. • Oversee the organization's finances and budget, working with staff to develop budgets, implement standard accounting practices, and ensure that the organization remains financially viable and builds its strategic reserves. • Work with the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and other key stakeholders to develop and implement short-and long-term strategic plans for Birds Georgia that advance Birds Georgia's mission; develop thematic programs that produce outcomes in line with the goals and objectives of the strategic plans. • Provide vision and oversight to program growth and expansion including conducting external needs assessments and internal reviews of program effectiveness. • Develop and cultivate a strong team culture that upholds the organization's values, promotes collaboration and teamwork, and a growth mindset so that staff feels valued, motivated and accountable to carry out our mission. • In collaboration with Board members and staff, develop strategies for addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organization and engaging communities underserved by conservation organizations. Day-to-Day Responsibilities • Maintain high levels of quality in all areas of organizational work. • Manage human resource administration including hiring, training, and evaluating employees, as well as creating an inclusive and empowering work environment. • Establish and lead an effective management team, ensuring that appropriate provisions for succession are in place. • Develop and implement systems to manage strategic objectives, financial analysis, and program reporting; maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. • Regularly communicate with the Board of Directors, including acting as a professional advisor to the Board on all aspects of the organization's activities. • Work with the Board of Directors' Finance Committee and finance staff to develop, approve, and manage annual revenue and expense budgets. • Provide transparent fiscal stewardship of Birds Georgia, ensuring financial accountability. This includes working with Birds Georgia's external auditor. • Ensure that the organization has all required insurance policies and any other licenses and policies required to operate in the state of Georgia. • Act as spokesperson for the organization and represent the programs and point of view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public. • Actively collaborate with other organizations (nonprofit, businesses and government at the local, state and national levels) to create partnerships and networks that advance Birds Georgia's mission and strategies and create opportunities for cooperative projects and complementary fundraising opportunities. • Represent Birds Georgia at the local (metro Atlanta), state and national level within the National Audubon and bird conservation networks, and within the Audubon Urban Collaborative Network, and key conservation leadership forums. • Partner with Audubon chapters and ornithological organizations in Georgia to broaden the organization's impact. • Promote as well as oversee participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work. • Participate in Birds Georgia programs and events. Qualifications • Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred, in business or nonprofit management, the natural sciences, or a related field. • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior-level leadership position at a non-profit organization, including financial management, fundraising, grant writing, recruiting, inspiring, and empowering staff and volunteers. • Demonstrated passion for conservation, birds, or wildlife, either through one's professional or private life. • Proven ability to build and manage systems that drive accountability, performance metrics, and continuous improvement across teams. • Experience leading major donor campaigns, cultivating high-net-worth individuals, and developing innovative fundraising strategies including digital and corporate partnerships. • Skilled in public advocacy and coalition-building to advance organizational priorities at the local, state, and national levels. • Demonstrated ability to translate strategic vision into actionable plans, monitor progress and adapt to changing conditions. • Experience with non-profit accounting principles, planning and managing finances, operational budgets, and reporting. • Experience in recruiting, training, and managing both staff and volunteers. • Track record of fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture, resolving internal challenges, and mentoring emerging leaders. • Experience working with a board of directors, and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with board members. • Public speaking and networking skills with the ability to build relationships and sustain partnerships with diverse communities. • Proficiency in office software and a willingness to adopt and leverage digital tools for chapter operations and communications. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • A commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equity in all aspects of the organization's work. Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, early mornings, and weekends as needed (mainly for special events and programs). Must be willing to travel within the state and beyond as the job requires. Status, Pay, & Benefits The successful candidate will be hired as a full-time exempt employee. This is a hybrid in-office/field/remote position based out of Birds Georgia's offices in the Trees Atlanta Kendeda TreeHouse on the Westside Atlanta Beltline. A significant portion of time will be spent in the community building relationships and fundraising.
