The Position: The Solution Design Engineer II, reporting to the Director of Industrial Engineering and Solution Design, is responsible for leading the design of innovative, scalable, and cost-effective operational solutions for both new and existing customers. This role operates with a high degree of independence and serves as a key technical partner to sales, operations, and customers to ensure alignment between customer requirements and Barrett Distribution Centers’ strategic and operational objectives. The Solution Design Engineer II owns the end-to-end development of high-quality solutions, delivering optimized processes, facility layouts, labor strategies, and integrated systems that drive efficiency, service excellence, and long-term operational performance. This position works Monday through Friday, from 9am-5:3pm. The compensation range for this position is $94K-$107K, depending on experience. Your Day-to-Day: • Solution Development: Lead the design of end-to-end operational solutions for new business opportunities, including facility layout, material handling equipment selection, labor planning, and integrated technology solutions tailored to customer requirements. • Customer Engagement: Collaborate directly with customers to assess business needs, operational constraints, and service expectations; translate requirements into comprehensive, actionable design specifications and operating concepts. • Data Analysis & Modeling: Perform advanced data analysis and modeling to define throughput, storage capacity, labor requirements, and scalability; develop and validate custom models and simulations to support solution decisions. • Proposal Support: Own solution narratives, detailed cost models, and ROI analyses for RFP responses and new business proposals; present and defend solutions to internal leadership and customers. • Technology Integration: Recommend, design, and evaluate automation technologies, systems integrations, and process flows to optimize operational performance, cost, and service levels. • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Lead cross-functional solution development efforts with sales, operations, engineering, IT, and project management to ensure solutions are operationally feasible and implementation-ready. • Documentation & Communication: Produce detailed design documentation, CAD layouts, and executive-level presentations that clearly communicate solution value, assumptions, risks, and benefits. • Industry Best Practices: Leverage industry-leading technologies, automation solutions, and best practices; contribute to continuous improvement of solution design standards • Mentors and provides technical guidance to Solution Design Engineer I team members. • Performs other duties as assigned • Travel: Moderate travel required to customer sites and company facilities (approximately 30%, up to 50% during peak project phases). What You Bring to the Table: • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field required. • Two (2) to Four (4) years’ experience in solution design, business process engineering, warehousing, production environment, or related experience required. • Advanced working knowledge of solution design and warehouse engineering principles. • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and AutoCAD. • Comprehensive understanding of warehouse operations and industry best practices. • Strong functional knowledge of WMS capabilities and integrations. • Ability to adjust training presentations to skill set of audience. • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. • Ability to deal with a high level of ambiguity, balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines. Strong emphasis on organizational skills and attention to detail. • Must demonstrate high level of interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work well under pressure and problem solve across a variety of business processes.
