Job Description Performs a variety of administrative and operational duties supporting the transportation of students during the school year and summer months. Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of bus routes. Provides advice and guidance to school administrators, bus drivers, and others regarding transportation matters. Operates school buses to transport students. Performs other duties as assigned. Responsibilities EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Assigns necessary staff required to fill vacancies and absentee personnel to insure full coverage of all bus routes. Continuously monitor employee absences and call outs to ensure AM, midday, and PM routes are covered. • Assists in the development and implementation of bus routes to ensure appropriate route planning, bus stop placement, and bus capacity. Plans safe and efficient bus routes based upon knowledge, on-site inspection, and/or input from drivers and administrators. • Collaborates with the Routing Technician in assigning students to appropriate bus stops and determining the need for and placement of additional bus stops. Develops and maintains routes for alternative transportation including special needs, displaced, and ESOL students. Updates bus routes as enrollment changes. Advises school personnel and transportation staff of route updates. Ensures that updated route sheets are provided to drivers and attendants. • Develops unique bus routes for summer programs of site and program recommendations from the Offices of Facilities and Special Education. • Works with Assistant Principals to implement transportation changes. Provides advice and guidance to school administrators, bus drivers, and others regarding transportation matters. Works with Assistant Principals to implement transportation changes and schedules school bus evacuation drills. Coordinates early dismissal, including scheduled and emergency closures. • Assists the Senior Operations Supervisor and Field Representative to visit schools and field sites in order to investigate and resolve transportation related concerns. Serves as a liaison with school administrators, drivers, parents, attendants, and other school personnel. Coordinates with bus drivers, school principals and area transportation supervisors to resolve serious problems. • Represents the Office of Transportation in meetings and participates in transportation activities as required. Communicates with school administrators, drivers, parents, attendants, and other school personnel. • Responds to school bus accidents and breakdowns to provide support to the area. Coordinates emergency procedures and notifies appropriate personnel. Provides support to the Senior Operations Supervisor, Field Representative, and the Area Dispatcher. • Serves as a mentor to newly assigned personnel. Advises/recommends personnel training needs to management. Monitors time and mileage reports for accuracy. Prepares reports. • Assists the Senior Operations Supervisor by pulling video player hard drives from buses in order to download and archive school requested videos. Monitors the Automated Vehicle Location system as necessary to check school and bus stop times. • Operates school buses in compliance with established guidelines as required. Adheres to established schedules to safely pick up, transport, and discharge students and staff. Maintains student discipline on the bus. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, And Experience • Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent. Three years of experience in the transportation of children. • College coursework is preferred. Licenses and Certifications • Possession of a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent. (The license may require certain endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.) Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities • Knowledge of the principles and practices of transporting children. Knowledge of the operation of school buses. Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures. Knowledge of personal computers and office software applications. Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Student Information System, Route Finder Pro, and any other software applications that may be necessary to complete the duties of the position. • Skill in the operation of school buses. Skill in reviewing and preparing reports. Skill in analyzing transportation issues. Skill in reading maps and route sheets. Skill in communicating. Skill in mentoring other employees. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to maintain confidential information. Physical And Environmental Conditions • Work requires physical labor in the operation of vehicles and travel throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan area, under a variety of weather and road conditions and topography. Work includes prolonged periods of sitting, lifting students, climbing on and off buses, using foot controls to operate gas and brake pedals, and pushing manual door openers. Work includes the operation of office equipment, including personal computers. Conditions Of Employment May be required to work additional hours with little or no notice. SALARY: Grade 08 on the AFSCME pay scale. Hourly rates range from $24.04 - $36.22.
