Job Description Position Overview: BAE Systems is seeking a dynamic and experienced External Communications Specialist to join our Platforms & Services sector. This role will focus on supporting and executing media relations and external communications strategies that enhance the company's reputation, support business objectives, and effectively communicate our mission to key stakeholders across six businesses within the P&S Sector, both domestically and internationally. The External Communications Specialist should have a strong understanding of the media landscape, marketing principles, with a proven track record of cross-functional collaboration. This role is all about collaboration, attention to detail, and organization, with opportunities to cross-train and learn other areas of communications to expand your career growth opportunities over time in the external space. Key Responsibilities: • External Communications: • Support the execution of comprehensive external communications plans that align with the Platforms & Services sector's business goals. • Craft compelling messages and narratives that highlight the sector's capabilities, achievements, and contributions to national security. • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including marketing, government relations, and business development teams, to ensure consistent messaging across all channels. • Media Relations: • Serve as coordinator with media relations professionals across the U.S. and globally to ensure strong, consistent content, responses and opportunities. • Review and edit media relations content for consistency style, tone and best practices. • Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues to support all media relations activities (press conferences, media briefings, prep sessions, etc.) • Support P&S media relations leads to pitch stories, manage press releases, and coordinate interviews to secure positive media coverage. • Lead the public release process for advertisements and press releases for all six businesses. • Monitor media coverage and provide analysis to leadership on trends and opportunities. • Content Development & Editing: • Ensure all content aligns with BAE Systems' brand voice and corporate messaging guidelines. • Maintain an editorial calendar and review process to ensure full coordination across a global team of media relations and public relations professionals. • Write talking points, response to queries in support of campaigns, and support teams during major media events/opportunities. • Develop media kits, background papers, and provide research support around reporters, publications, and industry trends. • While this role primarily supports the team writing press releases and pitching reporters, some direct media relations lead roles will be involved. It is designed to be a growth role with opportunity to expand your media relationships and skills as you learn the products, services, people and customers. • Event Support: • There will be opportunities to cross train with other external facing roles including events, exhibitions, trade shows, and conferences. • Measurement and Reporting: • Track and measure the effectiveness of external communications initiatives, providing regular reports and insights to leadership. • Use data-driven insights to refine strategies and improve outcomes Required Skills and Education • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field. • 2-3+ years of experience in journalism, writing, media relations, public relations, or external communications. • Highly developed organization skills and attention to detail. • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex topics into clear, compelling narratives. • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. • Ability to work alongside a team in crisis communications and high-pressure situations to help them stay coordinated and organize teams. • Familiarity with digital communications tools and platforms, including social media and media monitoring software. • Knowledge of the defense industry and government contracting is a plus.
