We are looking for a Lead UX Researcher to join the User Experience Research team at epocrates, the #1 medical reference and point of care app in the country for over 25 years. Mission/Team We are rapidly expanding the capabilities of our platform while maintaining the core experience that sets epocrates apart. In this role, the Lead UX Researcher will work within our Content Experience zone to help shape the clinical and editorial/news experience across our key platforms—including iOS and Android apps, web, and EHR (electronic health record) integrations. Role This Lead UX Researcher will be a key contributor within the Content Experience zone to help craft high-quality, user-centered solutions that meet the needs of healthcare professionals. They will collaborate closely with product managers, data scientists, engineers, and medical information teams throughout the software development lifecycle, providing both project-based support and strategic guidance. Their UX research recommendations will help guide our clinical tools and original media content toward improved value and relevance. Day-to-day research initiatives will involve recruiting participants, running research sessions, synthesizing findings, and defining next steps with stakeholders. These initiatives will span the design lifecycle from discovery research and opportunity framing through to evaluative research, usability testing, and ongoing monitoring. Role Location Remote Position Summary: Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 60% - Design research • Independently conduct user research studies with methods such as usability testing, concept resonance testing, in-depth interviews, and diary studies • Craft strong and visually compelling research readouts that synthesize actionable insights for a variety of stakeholders 30% - Design strategy and planning • Help inform epocrates product strategy by connecting individual projects to larger themes and opportunities • Coordinate and run multi-phase research initiatives that move from discovery through to design testing and evaluation, and that involve various internal stakeholders • Collaborate with stakeholders on communications that resonate with users 10% - Research ops • Assist with recruitment, scheduling and incentive distribution for user interviews or diary studies using provided platforms • Help communicate user research to the wider org through recurring touchpoints and share outs (e.g., newsletters, updates) • Help maintain and expand the epocrates UX Research repository About You Education, Experience, & Skills Required: • Required: Bachelor's degree in research-focused discipline, preferably social science (e.g. sociology, psychology, anthropology, HCI, etc.) and 5+ Years experience as a Research/Human Factors professional • Thorough understanding of core user research methods such as usability testing, concept resonance testing, in-depth interviews, and diary studies • Proven experience conducting user research studies independently • Strong qualitative analysis skills (e.g., transcript coding, theme mapping, etc.) • Familiarity with key toolsets of user research such as recruitment and testing platforms; experience with research repositories is a plus • Proven experience of helping run collaborative stakeholder workshops • Strong team player and partner dynamic • Proven ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining clear timelines • Engaging presentation skills, both written and oral • Experience working closely with UX design teams to iteratively test & validate design • Understanding of accessibility principles and a record of accomplishment in delivering inclusive design • Research and strategy experience related to AI-based products and solutions • Experience with healthcare or health tech is a major plus • Experience with news media and publishing is a major plus Behaviors & Abilities Required: • Help foster a team environment with clear goals and roles, where members contribute independently and effectively to design simple, effective, and elegant interactions between users and products • Create incisive problem framings that immediately focus teams on the most important root causes while also encouraging exploration • Simplify complexity through robust synthesis and explanatory narratives • Articulate and inspire commitment to a vision aligned with the organizational mission and goals • Capable of managing ambiguity, change and uncertainty, focusing on information at hand and making good and timely decisions to effectively keep work moving forward; encourage the team to take appropriate risks through cost/benefit analysis of various alternatives • Ethical commitment to the best interests of epocrates end users Expected Compensation $112,000 - $190,000 The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.
