Position: Senior Data Analyst Department: US Data and Insights Level: Early-Career Reporting to: Senior Manager, US Data Analytics Terms and conditions: Full-time, Permanent, News Media Guild Location: New York, NY | Hybrid 2 days per week in the office Annual Salary: $95,000 - $110,000 About the role The Guardian is hiring a thoughtful and curious Data Analyst to join the US team, where they will be primarily responsible for providing data and insights to the editorial department. This role focuses on understanding audience engagement trends and how our journalism performs across all platforms, while also collaborating with teams across the business where editorial and audience data intersect — including reader revenue, advertising and other growth initiatives. The analyst will report to the Senior Manager, US Data Analytics and partners across the newsroom and wider organization to draw insights that inform editorial strategy and decision-making at all levels. Key responsibilities Partner with editorial in the US to understand problems and challenges and to provide the insight through data analysis; occasional support for reader revenue, advertising and finance teams, as needed Create and query data models using SQL Support day-to-day operations including pulling data from a variety of sources Demonstrate a rigorous approach to testing and interpretation of test results Support regular reporting to inform audience insights, editorial engagement, and A/B testing performance as required Craft narratives, explain insights, and participate in / lead discussions with colleagues Design, review, and develop tailored dashboards for the US. Draw on the expertise from and collaborate with the global data, analytics, and research teams headquartered in London About you A clever problem solver with a keen eye for detail Comfortable using probability and statistics to perform and support analyses, and make recommendations Eager to collaborate with direct partners and colleagues across the organization Able to draw insights from large and complex data sets Able to work collaboratively across multiple teams and stakeholders A clear communicator who can explain results to a broad range of audiences Regular consumer of news, media, journalism, and digital storytelling Able to understand and synthesize data from multiple channels e.g. website, apps, newsletters, social media, Apple News, multimedia, etc. Knowledge & experience Experience applying statistics to strategic problems Excellent problem solver Good oral and written communication skills Experience in SQL and Excel/Google Sheets Experience with Tableau, or another data visualization tool, is preferred but not a must Degree and/or schooling in a related field a plus Prior experience (minimum 3) in a similar role (senior analyst) How to apply We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of.
