Oversee hospital-wide risk and patient safety programs, analyze safety events, and develop corrective actions. | Requires a Bachelor's degree, hospital risk management experience, proficiency in MS Office, and effective communication skills. | JOB SUMMARY: Effectively synthesizes risk management events, reports, and insurance claims. Interfaces with senior leaders, physicians, nursing staff and hospital staff to identify organizational vulnerabilities and intervene appropriately. Directs and advises internal and external clients in a manner consistent with the established risk management plan and excellent service standards. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Service: • Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center. • Upholds the Standards of Conduct and Corporate Compliance. • Represents the Risk Department of SJMC in a positive and professional manner. • Directs facility-wide risk and patient safety program using identification, investigation, and risk reduction strategies; maintains a network of information sources and experts; performs risk assessments and surveys loss potential. • Works with insurance and claims management and occasional legal counsel formulating facility strategies and legal case development. People: • Consistently follows facility guidelines and procedures in performance. • Provides timely response to events and event management. • Provides feedback on risk issues in a timeframe that supports risk reduction and zero harm. • Serves as on-call risk consult, responding to clinical and non-clinical risk questions in a timely fashion. • Models service standards and compassionate values. • Promotes a culture of responsiveness and safety in the course of daily work management programs within their departments. • Maintains a risk management education calendar. Quality: • Completes annual education requirements. • Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices. • Gathers and analyzes pertinent information related to any safety event and maintains departmental procedures. • Proactive analysis of patient safety and medical errors processes. • Develop appropriate and relevant corrective action plans to promote zero harm. • Identify departmental and system-issues and works collaboratively to resolve issues. • Maintains a strong knowledge of applicable and pertinent patient safety literature and shares global strategies through the course of business. • Uses strong oral and written communication skills with internal and external customers, including regulatory or payor sources including clear, concise and compassionate language, ensuring grammatical accuracy and succinctness of thought and uses SBAR style communication techniques. • Adhere to regulatory guidelines regarding patient privacy laws. Maintains confidentiality of all patient, hospital or physician information by using discretion when discussing patient matters and legal matters. • Provide staff and leadership updates on events and investigations using data analysis, trends, and other aggregated data as needed. • Other duties as assigned. Growth: • Contributes to improving patient satisfaction results. • Fosters a positive relationship with internal and external customers and utilizes growth opportunities in the department as well as within the risk management field. • Support hospital initiatives by contributing to safety surveys and safety initiatives within the organization and within the industry by focusing on preventive solutions to reduce harm. • Illicit staff and patient feedback to improve and sustain safety and customer service standards. • Participates in appropriate committees and educational opportunities. • Provides periodic in-services and routine orientation for employees, leaders, or medical staff regarding healthcare risk management principles and a culture of safety. Finance: • Promotes stewardship of hospital resources and time. • Adhere to all Federal and State regulatory requirements. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • High School Diploma/ GED Required • Bachelor's Degree Required • Minimum 3 years work experience in a hospital risk management office setting. • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook email, use of telephone with advanced clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. • Able to effectively communicate in oral and written English language. • Able to effectively navigate the electronic health record. • Other certification requirements as defined by the certification policy. PREFERRED: • Master's Degree Preferred • Bi or Multilingual • Prefer 3-5 years of experience in a clinical role as RN or equivalent • Prefer 3-5 years of experience in a hospital quality or risk management department. • Certification in project management, risk management, or patient safety within 36 months of hire.
