Job Summary Langan is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern or Co-op to join its collaborative team in Chicago, Illinois. This individual will serve a key function in supporting site feasibility studies which may involve field work, technical report preparation and calculations, pre-construction conditions documentation, design plans and specifications. In this role, you will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge and experience technically and professionally by partnering directly with industry leadership on a variety of exciting land development projects. Job Responsibilities • Assist with the planning, design and permitting of civil engineering, land development and infrastructure projects; • Assist with the preparation and modification of various engineering documents including reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, cost estimates and design plans for projects using engineering and design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, etc.) and equipment; • Effectively use reports, maps, drawings, engineering plans, tests, and aerial photographs to assess soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and topographical and geologic data and their impact on the planning and design of projects; • Support zoning, ordinance and permit assessments, assists with the sidewalk cast estimations, and determines the feasibility of projects based on the analysis of collected data; • Provide field inspection services, as needed; • Apply knowledge and techniques of engineering and advanced mathematics; • Collaborate with team members on project tasks and assignments; and • Perform other duties as requested. Qualifications • Student actively pursuing a four year or advanced degree in Civil Engineering; Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater is preferred; • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office Suite applications; • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities; • Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment; and • Possess reliable transportation for client meetings and job site visits and a valid driver’s license in good standing. This individual will serve a key function in design, permitting and client management/development efforts for a variety of land development projects, becoming part of the leadership team behind Langan’s continuing growth in the Grid Resilience market. Job Responsibilities • Lead site/civil and multi-discipline efforts on a variety of project sites, with a focus on Grid Resilience and Renewable Energy projects, including the design and oversight of site layout, grading, drainage, infrastructure, erosion and sediment control, etc. from concept through completion; • Design and permit residential, institutional, commercial centers, warehouse distribution centers, and mixed-use projects for both public and private clients; • Work closely with office leadership to develop growth plans and ensure staff utilization; • Possess an entrepreneurial demeanor and participate in Business Development activities by developing new clients for the firm and maintaining relationships with existing clients; • Lead site/civil efforts on a variety of project sites including the ability to design and oversee site layout, grading, drainage, infrastructure, erosion and sediment control, etc. from concept through completion; • Lead storm water management design, hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and design and SWPPP preparation; • Demonstrate experience in all aspects of land development engineering including the integration of geotechnical and environmental engineering; and • Performs other duties as requested. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; • 10+ years of successful, local and related site/civil engineering experience with a concentration in land development on Grid Resilience or Renewable Energy projects; • Professional Engineering license; • Site/civil experience on a variety of project sites including the ability to design and oversee site layout, grading, drainage, infrastructure, erosion and sediment control, etc. from concept through completion; • Strong client development and client management abilities; • Proficiency of AutoCAD or Civil 3D preferred; • Active participation in professional organizations; • Experience in technical and proposal writing; • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical, multitasking, and judgment capabilities; • Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment; and • Possess reliable transportation for client meetings and job site visits and a valid driver’s license in good standing. Prepare progress reports and draft change orders; • Perform and manage multiple projects and tasks within specific budgets, schedules, and deadlines. Minimize write-offs by keeping projects on budget; • Provide direct oversight and management of staff and senior staff for specific project assignments; • Coach, train and motivate staff; • Participate in the identification and pursuit of new clients, prepare proposals, develop additional work within an existing project, and attend business development meetings with new and existing clients; • Remain current on landscape architecture practices, guidelines, regulations, and best management practices and attend internal training to expand knowledge and skills; and • Perform other duties as requested. Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture; • 8+ years prior related experience; • Landscape Architecture license in good standing; • Passion for design excellence and the challenges of creating inspiring places in urban environments; • Possess creative and exceptional technical skills in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite, Lumion, Illustrator and 3D Modeling; • Strong interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communication skills; • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment; • Possess reliable transportation to access job sites and a valid driver’s license in good standing; and • Position requires work Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.
