About the Role As a Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on contributor on an engineering team led by our Technical Lead. You’ll own meaningful features end-to-end, from data model and API design through user interface implementation and production readiness. With guidance and mentorship from senior engineers, you’ll continuously expand your technical scope, ownership, and impact. This is an individual contributor role where you’ll spend most of your time designing, building, testing, reviewing, and improving software for a modern product platform. While your primary focus will be on a new product development, you’ll also contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of existing applications as needed. You’ll actively participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and collaborative problem solving, while developing a deep understanding of our technology stack and business domain. You’ll help uphold a high engineering bar by writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code and continuously improving the quality, reliability, and scalability of our software. You’ll use AI tooling (Claude Code, Copilot) as a force multiplier, not a crutch, while understanding and standing behind every line that lands. Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field (or equivalent combination of education and hands-on practical experience). Overall Experience 4+ years of professional software engineering experience across the full software development life cycle (SDLC). Growing autonomy: able to scope and break down well-defined work, drive features to completion, and know when to ask for help or escalate rather than getting stuck. Comfortable participating in code reviews and technical discussions, giving and receiving feedback constructively, and supporting less-experienced engineers as you grow (no formal management experience required). Domain Experience 2+ years of direct experience building, scaling, or maintaining form-driven or workflow-driven products; for example, dynamic form builders, application/intake platforms, low-code/no-code configuration tools, case-management systems, or high-volume transactional SaaS applications. Working understanding of domain-specific challenges, such as dynamic form schema design and rendering, conditional/branching logic and field-level validation, multi-step submission state (drafts, autosave, resume), versioning of form definitions, and secure handling of applicant PII. Hands-on experience designing and implementing review/approval workflows: status transitions, routing and assignment, audit trails, and notifications; that move a submission from draft through submitted, under review, and final disposition. Experience building accessible web applications that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards, with particular attention to complex, form-heavy interfaces (keyboard navigation, focus management, ARIA, and screen-reader-friendly error handling). Technical Experience 4+ years of full-stack development experience heavily focused on the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem, with TypeScript used end to end (front and back). Strong hands-on experience designing and building scalable backend services and RESTful/GraphQL APIs using Node.js and NestJS (DI, guards, interceptors), or deep Express/Fastify experience with a solid grasp of dependency injection. Solid experience developing responsive, high-performance frontends using React and Next.js (hooks, App Router, server components, SSR/CSR, typed clients). Practical experience with database design and management across relational and NoSQL stores: PostgreSQL or MySQL for structured, money-bearing/transactional application and submission data (schema, indexing, transactions, constraints, safe migrations), and MongoDB for flexible, versioned form definitions and dynamic profiles. Testing discipline as a default (unit, integration, and E2E), using tools such as Jest, Playwright/Cypress, and Supertest, treating the test suite as what lets the team move fast safely. Experience with asynchronous processing and message queues (e.g., RabbitMQ, SQS, or Kafka) for jobs such as notifications, document generation, and batch processing. Deliberate, efficient use of AI tooling (Claude Code, Copilot) in real development workflows, with full ownership of the resulting code. Preferred Qualifications Form-Builder & Low-Code Depth: Prior experience building configurable/JSON-schema-driven form engines or drag-and-drop form designers (e.g., react-hook-form, Formik, JSON Schema / react-jsonschema-form), including rendering, validation, and versioning of dynamic form definitions. Workflow & Case-Management Experience: Familiarity with workflow/BPM or state-machine engines and approval routing, including SLA tracking, delegation, and auditable status histories. Accessibility Expertise: Demonstrated experience running accessibility audits and remediation against Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA, including assistive-technology and screen-reader testing. Security & Compliance Awareness: Familiarity with industry-standard compliance frameworks and security protocols, such as SOC 2, NIST, or PCI-DSS, and experience applying these controls within a cloud-native software development lifecycle. Public-Sector / GovTech Experience: Experience delivering software for government agencies, education, or other public programs, where auditability, records retention, and data privacy are first-class requirements. Cloud & Delivery: Hands-on experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. Key Performance Goals High-Quality Feature Delivery Consistently deliver well-tested, high-quality product features on time. Scope your assigned work accurately within agile sprints and proactively flag technical roadblocks so they can be resolved. Platform Quality & Stability Contribute directly to the scalability, security, reliability, and accessibility of the applications platform (across NestJS, Next.js, PostgreSQL/MySQL, and MongoDB) by writing maintainable code, following code review standards, meeting Section 508 / WCAG 2.1 AA requirements, and minimizing production bugs. Collaboration & Growth Actively participate in code reviews and design discussions, absorb and apply feedback, and steadily grow your technical range and the scope of work you can own in partnership with senior engineers and the Technical Lead. Core Technical Contribution Take ownership of meaningful features and components including parts of the form engine, submission pipeline, and workflow/approval model and contribute to system design discussions. Grow toward larger architectural responsibility while collaborating closely with the team and the Technical Lead. ClassWallet is a positive, family-oriented team environment. As a result of ClassWallet’s innovation, public programs run with exponentially more efficiency and the impact and breadth of the programs for the individuals they serve is dramatically higher. This mission compliments the Company mission-based culture with focus on gratitude and work-life balance. About the Role We're modernizing a large, business-critical fintech platform. Our current system is a mature Node.js/Express + MongoDB backend (with RabbitMQ workers, batch jobs, and a reports service) paired with a tri-generational frontend — layers of Backbone/Marionette, legacy React class components, and a React + Redux + Material-UI app all coexisting in one codebase. We're looking for someone with the judgment to tell good patterns from bad ones — who can recognize where the legacy system went wrong, avoid repeating those mistakes in new work, and design scalable solutions that still have to live alongside a rigid, established system. You'll contribute to new NestJS services and Next.js UI, write tests, and ship changes that respect the constraints around you — using AI tooling (Claude Code, Copilot) as a force multiplier, not a crutch. What you'll do Work across the full stack — data model, API contract, UI, and production behavior — contributing to domains as they move onto the modern stack. Recognize bad legacy patterns and don't repeat them — read the existing Express/MongoDB and Backbone/React layers, understand where they fell short, and apply better practices in new development rather than carrying old habits forward. Design for scale within real constraints — build solutions that scale even when they have to integrate with a rigid legacy system that can't be changed wholesale. Build on the modern stack — NestJS modules (DI, guards, interceptors) and Next.js apps (App Router, server components, typed clients). Understand the strangler-fig approach — how legacy and new run side by side, behind feature flags, with zero data loss and no downtime — and contribute to it without disrupting it. Model relational data carefully — help move money-bearing/transactional data from documents into a normalized SQL schema with real constraints and safe migrations. Write tests as a default — unit, integration, E2E. The suite is what lets the team move fast safely. Spot and flag problems — the flaky test, the N+1, the missing index. Raise them clearly so they get prioritized, and pick them up when it makes sense. Use AI tooling efficiently while understanding and standing behind every line that lands. 4+ years shipping production full-stack Strong TypeScript front and back · NestJS (or deep Express/Fastify w/ DI grasp) Next.js/React (hooks, App Router, SSR/CSR) PostgreSQL or MySQL (schema, indexing, transactions, migrations) An eye for distinguishing good patterns from bad legacy ones Ability to design scalable solutions that fit within an existing, rigid system Testing discipline (Jest, Playwright/Cypress, Supertest) API design (REST, auth, backward-compatible evolution) Bonus: Experience migrating off a legacy code Fintech/payments/ledger Message queues (RabbitMQ/SQS/Kafka) MongoDB/Mongoose Aggregation AWS/Docker/Kubernetes/CI Deliberate AI-agent use in production workflows Who you are: Takes ownership and responsibility for their work Eager to take initiative and grow Has the judgment to spot bad legacy code and the discipline to not repeat it in new work Designs for scale even inside rigid constraints Refactors and builds with better practices rather than carrying old patterns forward Moves carefully without breaking trust (tests + small PRs + flags) Communicates trade-offs clearly Raises issues and flags risks rather than routing around them Our stack: Today: Node · Express · MongoDB · RabbitMQ · React/Redux · Backbone · Material-UI · AWS · Jest Going: NestJS · Next.js · TypeScript end-to-end · PostgreSQL/MySQL · full automated coverage ClassWallet is a positive, family-oriented team environment.
