Drive technical direction and write full-stack Ruby on Rails code while mentoring and collaborating with teams. | Significant Ruby on Rails experience, technical architecture influence, AI coding tools proficiency, and strong communication skills. | Welcome to Brightline! We are seeking a Full Stack Ruby on Rails Principal Software Engineer to drive technical direction across our platform, deepen our domain expertise in healthcare workflows, and raise the bar for the entire engineering team. We are primarily a Ruby on Rails shop and we are bought into keeping our tech stack simple so that we focus on shipping fast and having fun. Instead of betting on exciting new technologies, we favor straightforward solutions and defining standards so that the codebase and ecosystem are a joy to work with. We use Turbo, Tailwind, and ViewComponent to make beautiful UIs. Stimulus brings them to life and if we feel the need for it, we might sprinkle some React on top. We use Typescript where we think it benefits us, and default to Javascript otherwise. Our mobile apps leverage Hotwire Native to take advantage of existing web infrastructure. Responsibilities: Drive collaboration on technical direction for complex, cross-cutting systems — data modeling, API design, clinical workflow architecture, and integration patterns Scope and shape work end-to-end: from identifying the right problem to solving it, collaborating closely with product and design to define what “done” looks like Write code across the entire stack (currently Ruby + Rails on the backend and Turbo/Tailwind on the frontend) with a focus on the systems and abstractions that other engineers build on Evaluate technical risk and tradeoffs clearly — know when to invest in architecture and when to ship the simplest thing that works Mentor and elevate the team through architecture discussions, pairing, code review, and setting high standards without gatekeeping Build deep domain expertise in our problem space and use it to challenge product assumptions, surface risks early, and advocate for provider and member experience Collaborate across engineering, product, design, and clinical/operations teams to ensure technical decisions serve business and clinical goals Requirements: You're excited about improving behavioral health for children, teens, and their families You have significant experience developing software professionally, primarily Ruby + Rails, with a track record of influencing technical direction beyond your own code You shape how the team thinks about systems — you see how individual features connect to the broader architecture and can articulate tradeoffs to technical and non-technical stakeholders You own problems, not just tickets — you dig into the domain, question assumptions, and find the right solution even when it's not the obvious one You are thoughtful and empathetic in how you carry yourself, from decision making and execution, to communication and collaboration You raise the bar for the team through your work, your feedback, and your willingness to make things better without being asked You thrive in a flat, self-managing team where influence comes from clarity and trust, not authority You have developed your own workflow for building software with AI coding tools — you have opinions about when agents help, when they hurt, and how to get the best out of them You care about solving problems and aren't tied to particular solutions or technologies Bonus Points: Healthcare — especially clinical workflows, scheduling systems, EHR integrations, insurance billing, or multi-clinic operations Complex data modeling and migration challenges (unifying systems, managing domain complexity) API development and integrating with third-party systems Working in Shape Up or similar appetite-based development methodologies We offer several benefits, perks, and stipends: Medical, Dental, Vision, Long-Term Disability, Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Account, and 401k 12 Company Holidays, Holiday Shutdown, Paid Time Off, Parental Leave Health and Wellness Stipend, Home Office Reimbursement, Cell Phone & Internet Reimbursement and Professional Development Reimbursement Stock Options At Brightline we have built a total rewards philosophy that includes fair, equitable, competitive, geo-based compensation that is performance and potential based. Our strategy is based on robust market research, including external advisory specializing in national compensation, and thoughtful input from every level of our organization. It is a combination of a cash salary, equity, benefits, wellbeing, and opportunity. In compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the annual base salary range for applicants is $215,000-$240,000. Our Commitment to Building a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Workforce At Brightline, we believe that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging are essential to the foundation upon which our mission is built. Lead and execute strategic cross-functional initiatives by designing scalable processes and ensuring operational excellence. | 4+ years in operations/project management in high-growth healthcare startups with strong internal stakeholder management and clinical context. | Business Operations Project Lead The Role: We are searching for a Business Operations Project Lead to serve as the operational backbone for Brightline’s internal systems. This role brings execution rigor and operational discipline to the highest-priority strategic initiatives across the organization, translating business priorities into structured project plans, repeatable processes, and reliable execution. This is not a "status reporting" role. We need an Internal Architect who can walk into a room of disagreeing clinical and technical stakeholders and leave with a documented, automated workflow and/or solution that solves a bottleneck. You’ll serve as the execution partner who ensures strategic priorities translate into the scalable systems that allow our clinicians and engineers to do their best work. Reporting to the Director of Business Operations, you will ensure our outcomes lead to sustainable operational practice. Responsibilities: Strategic Project Execution • Own end-to-end delivery of high-priority cross-functional initiatives, ensuring projects are scoped, planned, resourced, and executed on time and aligned with organizational goals. • Translate organizational priorities into structured execution plans, including timelines, deliverables, and success metrics. • Act as the central coordination point for assigned initiatives, maintaining visibility into dependencies, risks, and progress across workstreams. • Proactively identify risks, bottlenecks, and tradeoffs, escalating decisions as needed to keep work moving forward. • Drive high-velocity iterations in a scrappy, Series C environment, focusing on rapid outputs and accelerated timelines to move teams from strategy to decision-making efficiently. Process Design & Documentation • Construct the Engine: Design, develop, and document repeatable processes, workflows, and operational playbooks that enable strategic initiatives to scale beyond one-off execution. • Own continuous process improvement as a standing responsibility, ensuring workflows evolve with organizational needs and are consistently followed. • Build and maintain comprehensive documentation (SOPs, process maps, decision frameworks, templates) that creates institutional knowledge and reduces execution friction. • Ensure processes are built for scale from the outset, not retrofitted later. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Management • Bridge the Gap: Serve as the operational point of contact for assigned strategic initiatives, acting as the primary "translator" between the medical team, engineering, and business leaders. • Influence without direct authority, building alignment and driving accountability across teams with competing priorities. • Facilitate strong cross-functional partnerships that accelerate execution, surface blockers early, and maintain momentum on complex initiatives. • Navigate Ambiguity: Move work forward in a high-growth environment where the playbook is still being written and directions are frequently evolving. Operational Excellence & Visibility • Create visibility into project health, progress against milestones, and risks requiring attention or escalation. • Manage competing demands and shifting priorities in real time, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and trade-offs are surfaced transparently. • Maintain operational discipline in execution—meeting cadences, status tracking, decision logs, and clear accountability structures. • Partner closely with the Director of Business Operations to ensure alignment on priorities, capacity allocation, and escalation pathways. Who You Are: • The Builder: 4+ years of experience in operations or project management within high-growth, venture-backed healthcare/digital healthcare startups (Seed to Series D). You’ve built systems where none existed. • Internal-First: You have a strong preference for internal relationship management over external partner or client-facing management. Your "customers" are our internal staff. • Clinical Context: You have direct experience with care delivery models and understand the friction of operationalizing clinical decisions. • Tech-Forward: You are hyper-vigilant about using AI and data tools to automate your own workflows and create visibility for leadership. • Proven Track Record: Demonstrated ability to own end-to-end delivery of complex, cross-functional projects with competing priorities and frequent ambiguity. • Expert Communicator: Strong ability to influence without direct authority, bringing leaders together to drive execution across diverse stakeholder groups. Benefits, Perks, and Stipends: • Medical, Dental, Vision, Long-Term Disability, Life Insurance, Flexible Spending Account, and 401k • 12 Company Holidays, Holiday Shutdown, Paid Time Off, Parental Leave • Health and Wellness Stipend, Home Office Reimbursement and Professional Development Reimbursement • Stock Options At Brightline we have built a total rewards philosophy that includes fair, equitable, competitive, geo-based compensation that is performance and potential based.
