Review and edit scientific content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and accessibility for pet owners. | Requires a Ph.D. in life or animal sciences with 8-10 years of scientific writing and editing experience, including peer-reviewed publications. | Scientific Editor, Volunteer Role About the Pet Cancer Foundation The Pet Cancer Foundation’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Each year, an estimated 12 million dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer, roughly six times the rate in humans. We’re working to change that. As our website and content development continue to expand we need detail-oriented, scientifically minded volunteers to strengthen our educational content through rigorous article oversight, ensuring our resources empower pet owners with reliable, evidence-based information. The Position: The volunteer Scientific Editor will review and edit newly developed content to ensure the accuracy, authenticity, and translation of complex information is of the highest quality for the pet owner in their time of need. Our Scientific Editor role is vitally important in our effort to become the foremost valued source of cancer education, awareness, and information for pet owners. • Please leave a note with your application to acknowledge your awareness of the volunteer nature of the role. Scientific Editor Duties and Responsibilities: • Review drafted articles to ensure all facts, claims and assertions of any scientific information are wholly and fully accurate and properly represent the research sources referenced. • Ensure that all research studies referenced and cited meet the organizations rigid standards, and of the highest known quality for the subject matter presented. Replaces studies when required and edits/updates draft articles to reflect those changes in source material. • Research and review any applicable subject matter when necessary to inform/familiarize yourself with the topics, issues, and challenges of the scientific writers for any assignment. • Constructively assist writers in improving their work for the benefit of the project. • Contribute proposals or recommendations to team and department leadership that may improve organizational efforts to build and maintain the highest quality of information for the pet owner • Ensure our final product is understandable for the pet owner at a high school reading and knowledge level. About You You have developed excellent skills writing your own research manuscripts and have advanced your career into the scientific editing stage, reviewing content produced by other Ph.D.'s in their publication of literature. Your writing and editing experience will consist of checking for plagiarism, while having an understanding of communicating difficult scientific concepts to a lay audience. Always a team player and respective of timelines and deadlines, you have: • A Ph.D. in the life and /or animal sciences or a biological discipline (required). • 8-10 years’ experience writing and editing scientific-related content, including published, peer-reviewed papers • Strong history of translating research or technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content written for specialist and non-specialist audiences • Ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature • Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail • Excellent oral communication skills Why Volunteer with Us?
