Qualifications Education/Certification: • High School diploma or GED • Certification as a nurse aide, medical assistant or EMT preferred • Hold/pursue certification on basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Special Knowledge/Skills • Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) • Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills • Ability to use software to develop databases and do word processing • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Experience • One (1) year experience in health-related position; experience working with school-age children Major Responsibilities and Duties Health Services • Work under the direct and indirect guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse. • Maintain the clinic in the absence of the nurse if no sub nurse is available. Contact lead nurse or buddy school nurse if unclear about any medical issue. • Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illness according to a detailed protocol established by the school nurse (RN) or medical advisor. • Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures and maintain accurate log of medications dispensed. • Perform procedures such as tube feedings and catheterizations (after trained by a Registered Nurse). • Assist with screening programs, take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure), and accurately document results as proscribed by district, state, and federal requirements. Communicate findings to supervising school health staff for direction. • Operate clinic equipment (Blood Pressure monitor, audiometer, glucometer, AED, Titmus machine and other medical equipment) • Escort students to and from health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary. • Assist in keeping the clinic clean and sanitary as well as engaging for students and parents (bulletin boards, educational displays, models, etc.) • Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN). • Contact emergency medical services (EMS) according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN). Safety • Maintain an efficient and safe clinic including following infection control procedures as directed by the school nurse (RN). Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care. Clerical • Prepare, compile, maintain, and file all correspondence, reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate and confidential student health records. • Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals to school nurse (RN). • Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed. Compliance • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Other • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. • Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines. • Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief. • Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed. • Perform other duties as assigned. Report progress monitoring data of SIOP walks within campus ILT meetings. • Provide campus training as directed by principal and district. • Attend district ESL meetings, ARD meetings and/or ARD/LPAC meetings of EBs participating in Special Education. • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents. • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members. • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. • Participate in the district professional development (Summer MLP Sessions). • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional involvement by actively researching current trends. • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies. • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. • Monitor and maintain ESL Certification records for all campus staff.
