In this vital role you will provide leadership across a broad portfolio of complex, high-visibility initiatives and act as an enterprise connector across Amgen’s site network and global functions. The Director Business Performance is a critical site leadership role responsible for advancing the strategic, operational, and cultural performance of the Amgen Rhode Island (ARI) site. Reporting to the ARI Site Head, this leader serves as a trusted advisor and integral member of the Site Leadership Team (SLT), owning site-wide strategy execution, business performance management, and enterprise-level initiatives that enhance resilience, productivity, and execution excellence. This role operates with significant autonomy and influence, integrating strategy, operations, governance, and external engagement across the ARI site. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: Chief of Staff for VP, ARI Site Operations. Site Strategy and Business Performance Leadership Lead ARI site strategic planning, including development, execution, tracking, and refinement of 1-year, Forward 12-Quarter, and 10-year site strategies aligned to Amgen’s Long-Range Plan. Translate site strategy into an integrated portfolio of prioritized initiatives with clear performance metrics, milestones, and accountability. Own site-wide performance management, including dashboards, quarterly business reviews, productivity portfolios, and transformation initiatives. Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Site Head and ARI SLT, guiding decision-making on priorities, trade-offs, and risk. Executive Leadership, Governance, and Reporting Shape agendas and facilitate strategic and tactical discussions as part of the ARI Site Leadership Team (SLT) while taking initiative to drive follow-through on leadership decisions. Lead high-visibility, cross-site and cross-functional initiatives requiring a strong business acumen and executive communication skills. Plan and coordinate internal and external executive visits to the site, including agendas, executive presentations, and site tours inclusive of all logistics. Partner closely with the SLT, Government Affairs, and Corporate Communications to strengthen Amgen’s presence within the Rhode Island ecosystem by developing strategic external partnerships with academic, industry, government, and community organizations. Represent ARI in executive forums, site network discussions, and external engagements as delegated by the Site Head. Act as cultural ambassador, reinforcing Amgen’s culture, values, and patient-focused mission. Facilitate site awards and staff recognition programs, and prepare external reports as required. Partner closely with the SLT, Operating Team, Engagement Team to foster strong engagement across Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), site councils, and cross-functional communities. Business Resilience Oversee the team responsible for the site risk profile, mitigation strategies, and escalation pathways in partnership with the ARI SLT. Oversee the business continuity program, risk management program, and facilitation of the Incident Management Team (IMT). Ensure operational rigor and resilience across the ARI site, proactively identifying risks and driving mitigation strategies. Program Management Oversee team that provides program management of strategic programs such as New Product Introductions (NPI), Business System implementations, plant shutdowns, and operational improvements. Ensure execution excellence principles are embedded throughout the organization. CI2.0 – Continuous Improvement + Artificial Intelligence Oversee critical site-wide programs including operational excellence, continuous improvement, and digital transformation. Facilitate kaizen/improvement events as required while also ensuring teams have the knowledge, skills, and tools required to successfully execute improvements in their areas of the business. Oversee development, refinement, and implementation of ARI’s digital roadmap and partner with the SLT to educate and deploy artificial intelligence in ways that help improve the business. Technology and Workforce Strategy (TWFS) Partner with global functions and the ARI SLT to continue to evolve the way we work. This will include execution of critical digital solutions to drive greater reliability, efficiency, and agility. Partner with the SLT to ensure each function has a clear understanding of their workforce drivers and workforce plan. Basic Qualifications: Doctorate degree and 4 years of strategic operations, or business performance / chief of staff experience OR Master’s degree and 8 years of strategic operations, or business performance / chief of staff experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of strategic operations, or business performance / chief of staff experience AND In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have at least 4 years of experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation of resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above. Preferred Qualifications: Progressive leadership experience in site operations, strategy, or enterprise business performance within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare organization. Demonstrated ability to operate at the executive level, influencing senior leaders and synthesizing complex information into clear recommendations. Experience leading site-wide or enterprise-wide transformation initiatives. Experience creating and driving AI/digital use cases in operating environment. Strong executive presence with exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills. Proven ability to lead in matrixed, highly complex environments. Experience managing risk, resilience, and business continuity programs. Track record of delivering results through a collaborative, inclusive, and professional leadership style. Experience working across global or multi-site organizations. In this vital role you will support upstream manufacturing processes in two West Greenwich, Rhode Island clinical/commercial manufacturing plants. Responsibilities include providing operational support, troubleshooting, and optimization for assigned equipment; advising and applying engineering principles to the design and implementation of new equipment (Stainless and Single Use Systems). Support system reliability and operational optimization efforts. Identify system performance risks (e.g. single point of failure or obsolescence) and implement risk reduction strategies. Lead and execute improvement efforts (including identifying cycle reduction time opportunities, efficiency gains, and yield improvement opportunities) Lead or support technical root cause analysis, incident investigations, and solving on equipment (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control system problems).
