Job Description California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) seeks an experienced and strategic Senior Manager of Membership to manage, support, and implement our statewide membership program. Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, this role executes and collaborates in the development of membership fundraising strategies, supports acquisition and retention efforts, and manages the day-to-day operations and performance of the membership program. The Senior Manager will collaborate closely with the Director of Development and manage relationships with direct marketing vendors to support a high-performing, integrated membership program that improves ROI and net revenue. Responsibilities RESPONSIBILITIES: Membership Strategy and Fundraising Leadership (60%) Support the development and lead the execution of the annual membership strategy in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications, including goals for revenue, retention, upgrades, and acquisition. Grow and diversify the membership base by deepening connection with a wide range of audiences and strengthening donor journeys, renewals, benefits, value propositions, and workplace giving channels. Oversee all integrated direct mail and digital fundraising campaigns, including acquisition, reinstatement, renewal, appeals, and stewardship, ensuring strong creative, segmentation, testing, and optimization. Manage and coordinate direct marketing vendors to ensure timely, effective, and on-budget execution across all membership campaigns. Identify and recommend cost efficiencies across membership campaigns and operations to increase net revenue and strengthen long-term program sustainability. Manage analytics, insights, and reporting for the membership program, including dashboards, monthly and quarterly reports, campaign analysis, and deep dives, elevating findings, risks, and recommendations to the Director of Marketing and Communications. Implement audience segmentation and insight strategies that strengthen engagement, improve messaging relevance, and support broader organizational goals such as advocacy and volunteerism. Oversee membership surveys, interpret findings, and share cross-departmental insights to strengthen stewardship, content, and operations. Draft and refine high-level direct mail letters, fundraising emails, and membership messaging based on approved strategy and creative direction to support appeals, upgrades, and donor engagement. Support the execution of membership storytelling and content strategy with support from marketing partners, ensuring messaging is compelling, inclusive, and aligned with CSPF’s brand and fundraising goals. Membership Experience, Stewardship, and Operations (30%) Manage implementation of the membership retention strategy, monitoring performance, identifying risks, and implementing improvements that strengthen renewal rates and deepen member loyalty. Ensure excellence in membership operations, including benefit fulfillment, customer service protocols, data hygiene, gift processing coordination, and efficient internal workflows. Collaborate with the team on the delivery of member stewardship opportunities, including events, webinars, newsletters, and the magazine, ensuring they reinforce the value of membership and deepen connection. Partner with the Director of Marketing and Communications on management of key agreements, ensuring compliance, accurate communication, and timely annual reporting. Monitor and refine the member benefits package, providing recommendations to ensure offerings remain compelling, mission-aligned, and operationally feasible. Ensures membership contributions and benefits comply with IRS rules governing charitable contributions, including the treatment of quid-pro-quo benefits, disclosure requirements, and donor acknowledgments. Collaborate closely with Development to ensure consistent donor stewardship, coordinated donor journeys, and seamless movement of members into higher levels of giving. Serve as a key internal resource on membership experience, providing input and insights to colleagues across Marketing and Communications, Development, Programs, and Finance. People and Team Leadership (10%) Directly manage one team member, a manager, and offer indirect leadership and support to two additional staff, ensuring strong performance, communication, and coordination across the membership team. Provide direction, feedback, and accountability to consultants and vendor partners to ensure effective, timely, and on-budget execution. Foster an inclusive, collaborative team culture that reflects CSPF’s values and encourages innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. Contribute towards other marketing and membership projects as needed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Commitment to CSPF’s mission and Justice, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity initiatives. Bachelor’s Degree Or Equivalent Experience Required. 7+ years of relevant nonprofit experience in membership, annual giving, direct response fundraising, or related fields. 2+ years of team leadership experience, preferably managing staff and vendors in fundraising or marketing environments. Experience working as a direct marketing consultant or managing external direct marketing partners, including agencies, creative vendors, or list brokers. Demonstrated experience supporting or managing a membership or annual giving program and using data to drive decisions. Strong understanding of direct mail, digital fundraising, donor journeys, segmentation, and integrated campaigns. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Strong written and oral communication. Willing and able to travel and/or attend events across California, sometimes on weekends or evenings, as necessary. Proficiency in Salesforce, SharePoint, Slack, Asana, Expensify, Zoom preferred. Experience launching new ideas or driving process improvements. Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations.
