Brief Overview The Principal Solution Architect is a hands-on, senior architect who is accountable for developing technical implementation blueprints and reusable patterns for features in Amwell’s commercial products. This technologist has a deep understanding of software design principles and a proven track record of designing scalable, performant applications leveraging cloud and prem technologies. As a member of Amwell’s Solution Architecture team, the incumbent will collaborate with other architects, Engineering and Product leaders, and Business constituents to identify appropriate technical methods and platforms to satisfy functional requirements. As a key contributor to the Architecture discipline, this individual will support governance processes in the Product Development Lifecycle (PDLC), assist with scoping and estimation of technical delivery, drive cross-functional collaboration, and evaluate new technologies and methods to address emerging commercial needs. Core Responsibilities Solution Design: Develop and design end-to-end technology solutions that are aligned with business goals and objectives. This includes choosing the appropriate design patterns, platform, and tools for each solution. Technical Leadership: Provide subject matter expertise throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring solutions are properly designed, developed, and deployed. Requirements Analysis: Collaborate with stakeholders (business, product management, and IT teams) to gather and analyze functional and non-functional requirements. Architecture Modeling: Create high-level and detailed architecture models (e.g., UML, context diagrams, etc.) to visualize and document system structures and component interactions. Technology Evaluation: Assess and recommend new technologies and frameworks, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable. Integration: Design and plan how the solution will integrate with existing systems, components , databases, cloud platforms, and third-party services. Stakeholder Communication: Present architectural designs and solutions to key stakeholders, including business executives, project managers, and technical teams. Design Reviews: Ensure that the implemented solution meets quality standards, including performance, security, and compliance requirements. Risk Management: Identify potential risks and issues in solution designs and mitigate them through proactive measures and adjustments. Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation of solution designs, architectures, and configurations. Continuous Improvement: Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to continually improve the architecture and design processes. Key Skills Experience: experience in software development and architecture design, with a strong background in designing and implementing enterprise-level solutions, particularly in SaaS applications. Technical Expertise: Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Java, Javascript, Python), cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), and application frameworks. Cloud & Infrastructure: Deep understanding of microservices architecture and building SaaS platforms with working knowledge of containerized (Docker, Kubernetes) cloud infrastructure and services. Event-Driven Architecture: Strong experience designing and implementing Pub/Sub event-driven systems using messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Google Cloud Pub/Sub, or AWS SNS/SQS) for decoupled and scalable communication between systems. Security & Compliance: Knowledge of security best practices (AAA frameworks), data privacy regulations (e.g. HIPAA, GDPR), and industry compliance standards (e.g. HITRUST, PCI). Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex technical challenges. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Project Management: Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies, as well as the ability to work in cross-functional teams. Qualifications 5+ years in healthcare domain 5+ years progressive experience in complex business and technical environments as an Architect is required with progressive experience leading cross-functional teams and driving large-scale enterprise initiatives 5+ years architecting Java and NodeJS solutions; REST/SOAP API design & cloud architecture (Azure, AWS, GCP) 4+ years working with FHIR 4.x standards 3+ years working with HL7 2.x and 3.x (CCDA) standards 2+ years working with SSO frameworks and implementation patterns 2+ years working with master data management (MDM) concepts Experience working with API management platforms (e.g. APIGEE, Kong, AWS API Gateway, etc.) Experience working with healthcare clinical data repositories (e.g. Google Healthcare API, Aidbox, etc.) Experience designing authentication and authorization patterns and platforms Savvy communicator who can tailor their message to diverse audiences, including technical, business, and clinical stakeholders Ability to align technology solutions with clinical goals and corporate strategy Industry knowledge and experience with Videoconferencing and Unified Communications products and underlying technologies Proven ability to build consensus and operate in a matrixed environment as an individual influencer Experience managing relationships with external vendors and partners to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions Familiarity with revenue cycle management concepts Familiarity with payor quality metric management, risk adjustment, and care gap closure concepts. Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, such as HIPAA, GDPR, and other relevant healthcare compliance requirements Current or previous US Public Trust clearance or the ability to pass a Public Trust background check Do Well. The actual salary offer will ultimately depend on multiple factors including, but not limited to, knowledge, skills, relevant education, experience, complexity or specialization of talent, and other objective factors. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for an annual bonus based on a combination of company performance and employee performance. Long-term incentive and short-term variable compensation may be offered as part of the compensation package dependent on the role. Some roles may be commission based, in which case the total compensation will be based on a commission and the above range may not be an accurate representation of total compensation.
