The Senior Applied AI & Intelligent Automation Engineer position offers a unique opportunity to join a fun, innovative engineering team within the AI & Data Science (AI&D) - organization of Amgen. You'll work on next-generation capabilities and services in Applied AI & Automation using innovative Commercial Off-the-shelf (COTS) products, open-source software, frameworks, tools, and cloud computing services. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Specialist IS Architect to design, develop, and deploy scalable AI/ML systems with a strong emphasis on agentic automation, generative AI, and MLOps guidelines. This position is ideal for a hands-on architect who thrives at the intersection of modern AI technologies and enterprise-grade platforms of a maturity spectrum from Agentics, Intelligent Automation to Robotic Process Automation. Roles & Responsibilities: Builds and maintains full-stack AI applications, ensuring performance, scalability, and cost efficiency. Designs and implements agentic AI systems that autonomously perform sophisticated tasks, demonstrating LLMs, multi-agent orchestration, and tool integration. Collaborates multi-functionally with data scientists, engineers, and product teams to drive innovation and platform reuse. Stays ahead of with the latest trends in generative AI, multimodal models, and agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain, N8N, CrewAI). Designs, develops, and deploys automation workflows using platforms such as UiPath and Power Automate. Integrates all solutions securely with enterprise systems (e.g., SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow, MES/LIMS/ELN/QMS) via robust APIs, connectors, and least-privilege access controls. Outlines design documents (e.g., Technical Design Documents) in support of development efforts. Contributes to the development of procedures and standards to continually improve delivery of intelligent automation and applied AI (GenAI, agentic, and ML) projects. Conducts code reviews with peers to ensure each increment aligns with the original design as defined in the user story and adheres to the highest quality standards, continuously expanding the reusable object library. Strong working knowledge of agent-based automation such as AWS BDA, OpenAI, LangChain, LangGraph, and UiPath. Command of machine learning algorithms—including regression, tree-based ensembles, clustering, dimensionality reduction, time-series models, deep-learning architectures (CNNs, RNNs, reinforcement learning, and transformers), and modern LLM/RAG techniques—with the judgment to choose, tune, and operationalize the appropriate method for a given business problem. Proficiency in Python, ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and cloud platforms (AWS or Azure), with hands-on experience using MLOps tools and managing the AI model lifecycle. Strong understanding of LLM-based architecture, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning techniques, with current knowledge of when to use the right approach within the GenAI ecosystem. Skill in building hybrid products that combine LLMs with automation platforms (e.g., UiPath, Power Automate) and enterprise data sources. Proficiency in designing, developing, and deploying automation workflows using platforms such as UiPath and Power Automate. Good-to-Have Skills: Proficiency in business process modeling techniques such as UML or BPMN. Familiarity with vector databases and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Knowledge of architecting and deploying end-to-end machine learning pipelines using modern MLOps stacks such as Kubeflow, Amazon SageMaker, and the OpenAI SDK. Ability to optimize AI workloads for cloud-native environments, ensuring robust CI/CD, monitoring, and governance. Experience with observability tools and model monitoring platforms. Awareness and application of responsible AI practices, including model explainability, fairness, and observability. Knowledge of modern SAP platforms and modules, preferably S/4HANA and the Build Process Automation (BPA) suite. Experience in the pharma or biopharma industry is preferred, but healthcare industry experience will also be considered. Strong solution design and problem-solving skills. Strong understanding of technology, functions, or platforms. Ability to analyze client requirements and translate them into effective solutions. Familiarity with API integration technologies, platforms, protocols, and standards (e.g., ESB, REST, SOAP). Knowledge of SQLite, MySQL, or similar database management systems.
