THE AMERICAN SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF ANNOUNCES AN OPENING FOR Administrative Assistant, Student Life CLOSING DATE: Until Filled REVISED: 09/26/2025 POST: 09/26/2025 The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners. ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list, then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone. POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Administrative Assistant Department: Student Life Supervisor: Director of Student Life or Designee Description: 12 months – Benefits eligible Union or NCB: Union SCOPE OF DUTIES Under the supervision of the Director of Student Life, Associate Director of Student life, or designee, performs general administrative and secretarial duties for the Student Life department. PRIMARY DUTIES • Performs general office duties. • Maintains an organized filing system for department and student records. • Arranges meetings and spaces, including setup and coordination for department staff and events. • Provides a professional and welcoming space for students, staff, and visitors. • Assists with the Student Life Director's schedule and calendar. • Facilitates the planning and implementation of student life programs and events, such as orientation, student government, or extracurricular activities. • Works with the Business Office on matters relating to the Student Life department's budget, processes purchase orders, and ensures receipts are returned in a timely manner. • Orders supplies and maintains inventory for the Student Life office and related programs. • Prepares correspondence and organizes, updates, and maintains department records, files, and databases. • Maintains employee attendance records within the department. • Creates agendas and maintains minutes for department meetings. • Serves as a point of contact for students and parents regarding student life activities and general department inquiries. • Assists in the collection and dissemination of information for student life communications, such as newsletters or announcements. • Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • High school diploma, supplemented by a minimum of two years of secretarial experience. • Additional education or secretarial experience will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. • Sign language proficiency or a willingness to learn. • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Word, Power Point, and Excel) and Google platform required. SALARY AND BENEFITS: • Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request. • Outstanding benefits package including Retirement 403B with generous school matching, group health insurance, and other fringe benefits. • $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service ASD is ALL ways able.
