To support this work, we are looking for a Human Resources Business Partner to join our Operations team. What You’ll Do As a part of the team, you will support our Forest Restoration department’s field-based forestry team. This role will play a critical part in aligning HR initiatives with operational goals, with a strong emphasis on recruiting field-based staff, and implementing and managing a comprehensive safety program, ensuring OSHA and state and federal compliance, enhancing employee engagement, and driving diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) across all field-based operations. The position serves as a strategic thought leader, always focusing on the organization’s culture, values, and purpose while also being actively involved in the day-to-day, tactical aspects of HR. This will be more than a strategic role; it will require a hands-on approach, working closely with staff in the field to ensure programs are implemented effectively and with care. Major responsibilities include: Safety Program Development & Management * Collaborate with the Forest Restoration team to implement and maintain a field-focused safety training and awareness program. * Conduct regular safety audits, site visits, and risk assessments in partnership with field leadership. * Ensure training programs are accessible and culturally relevant to a diverse workforce. * Ensure that field staff are supplied with safety equipment and that it is maintained according to applicable standards. * Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and other applicable regulations. * Become familiar with and proficient in sponsor agency norms and policies related to safety and transportation. * Lead investigations and corrective actions for safety incidents and near misses. * Maintain up-to-date documentation for all compliance areas including training records, workplace injury logs, and certifications. * Stay current with changing labor and safety laws across multiple jurisdictions and communicate updates to stakeholders. Field HR Support * Act as the primary HR contact for field-based teams, providing virtual support. * Support workforce planning, talent development, and performance management aligned with business needs and company values. * Manage new and current employee personnel files and benefits management to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance. Recruitment & Onboarding * Work with the Forest Restoration team to coordinate logistics for the recruitment and hiring process for open positions. * Serve as the lead recruiter for field roles—from drafting job descriptions to screening candidates and coordinating interviews. * Partner with hiring managers to ensure inclusive, timely, and effective hiring practices. * Develop and maintain relationships with select partner organizations to identify and create a pipeline for forestry positions within the organization. * Lead and continuously improve the position-specific portion of onboarding for Forest Restoration new hires to ensure consistency, compliance, and connection to organization culture. Employee Relations & Performance Management * Serve as a trusted advisor to field staff on employee relations issues. * Conduct fair, impartial, and thorough investigations and follow-up actions. * Provide coaching to supervisors on performance management and conflict resolution. * Develop structured opportunities to gather feedback from field-based employees on how the organization can better support the development of its culture and infrastructure, ensuring their unique work environments and needs are reflected in organizational practices. * Guide supervisors in setting clear performance goals, delivering timely feedback, and conducting effective reviews. * Support performance improvement plans (PIPs) and employee development strategies. * Ensure consistent and fair application of performance expectations across diverse teams and geographies. Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility (DEIA) * Integrate DEIA best practices into all field HR initiatives, including hiring, training, and development. * Partner with leaders to create inclusive policies and foster a culture of belonging for a geographically dispersed and diverse workforce. * Ensure onboarding, training, and employee engagement initiatives are inclusive and accessible to employees with varying backgrounds, languages, and needs. * Support employee resource groups (ERGs), community outreach, and DEIA awareness campaigns. Additional experience accepted in lieu of. * At least 5 years of experience supporting multiple human resources functions, specifically navigating safety and labor laws in the following states: CA, CO, FL, ID, LA, MS, MT, NM, NC, OR, SC, TX, and WA. * Demonstrated experience managing a multi-state, field-based safety program, including compliance with state and federal regulations, incident response, and the development of proactive safety initiatives tailored to remote or outdoor work environments. * Current OSHA 30-Hour Training DOL Card or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire. * Experience working for a non-profit organization is preferred, with a focus on forestry, botany, or ecological restoration highly desired. * Deep knowledge of employment law and federal, state and local compliance. * Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, self-directed, and able to work with minimal supervision. * Demonstrated knowledge of HRIS systems, Office 365, and project management tools. Reporting and Supervision The HRBP reports to the Vice President, Human Resources. This position will work closely with the Resilient Forests program team. This position does not have any direct reports at this time. Working Conditions This is a fully remote position based in the United States and requires the ability to work across various time zones to support a geographically diverse team. Up to 10% of travel throughout the U.S. and/or to American Forests’ headquarters in Washington D.C. may be required. The individual must be comfortable with prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing at a desk and working on a computer. The budget salary range is between $60,000 and $75,000.
