AMCTO is Ontario’s largest volunteer municipal sector professional association. Our mission is to deliver professional growth, networks, advocacy, and leadership to support and strengthen the knowledge, skills, and capabilities of municipal professionals now and into the future. Join AMCTO’s Policy and Government Relations team, where your contributions will help to ensure positive outcomes for Ontario communities by supporting the people who deliver local programs and services to Ontarians. This includes collaborating directly with municipal administrative leaders, staff on their top priorities, building coalitions with external organizations and associations, and initiating strategies to support an anticipated updated Issue Profile. We are seeking a talented and experienced Policy Advisor who will report to the Manager of Policy and Government Relations to support advocacy efforts on proactive and reactive policy issues, conduct research and analysis, and develop timely tools and products to support members in the administration and operation of municipalities. You are an excellent candidate for this position if you are: an experienced and highly- organized policy professional; a forward-looking, innovative strategic thinker; curious and team-oriented and; can support AMCTO’s vision and mission. Some specific skills and experience that would make you the ideal candidate are: • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and policy processes and the municipal environment; • A post-secondary degree in political science, public administration, public policy or a related discipline or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and government relations/government experience; • Experience with a professional association or similar not- for-profit setting or the municipal, provincial or federal government sector with experience in conducting research and developing policy positions and recommendations in a political context; • Considerable experience in policy analysis and development, research, and project management to manage multiple activities simultaneously and coordinate projects and programs; • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and persuasive skills, to further Association objectives through interaction with provincial and federal ministries and agencies and customer service skills to facilitate efficient and effective delivery of service to both members and non-members. The above skills and experience will help the Policy Advisor to undertake the responsibilities of the role including: • Monitoring, assessing and analysing policy, legislative and regulatory proposals, initiatives and issues relevant to AMCTO members, gauging municipal trends, and developing recommendations, reports and submissions to government on behalf of the Association; • Conducting primary and secondary research related to municipal administration; • Leading special research projects, including working with teams comprised of members, external organizations and partners, all within approved work plans; • Preparing and circulating member communications for government relations and legislative services related activities and developing content for the policy and government relations related sections of the Associations website. AMCTO has a hybrid work environment with in-person office days required to meet operational needs. Additionally, part of your role will include travel for meetings, conferences, forums and events to further the portfolios goals. The starting salary for this position is within the range of $93,600 - $117,000 depending upon skills and experience. The position is a 13-month contract position covering a staff leave with an option of extending the contract to an additional 6 months.
