Support ATM automation modernization and integration of new airspace entrants through engineering and technical documentation.
Requires 7+ years in ATM/ATC automation, FAA systems knowledge, and avionics communications expertise.
About AirSpace Innovation: AirSpace Innovation (ASI) is a dynamic small business providing cutting-edge engineering, scientific, program management, and strategic planning services to the federal government, commercial, and academic sectors. Leveraging our expertise in aviation technology, air traffic management, research, systems engineering, and acquisition planning, we collaborate with diverse stakeholders to achieve our customers’ missions efficiently and cost-effectively. We work at the intersection of aviation technology and air traffic management (ATM) modernization initiatives, with a growing focus on integrating new entrants such as space launch and reentry, higher airspace operations, UAS, and UAM into the National Airspace System (NAS). ASI supports an environment where employees can thrive through competitive benefits and flexible work options. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off (PTO), and a flexible work schedule. Job Description: ASI is hiring a technical engineer to support ATM automation modernization, ATM infrastructure (including communications and surveillance), and machine-to-machine data exchange for next-generation airspace concepts and programs. A core part of this role is helping shape how ATM systems and services evolve to safely and efficiently integrate new entrants (space launch and reentry, advanced air mobility / UAM, and higher airspace operations) alongside traditional operations, including air traffic flow management (ATFM/TFM) and air traffic control (ATC) automation. This role also requires strong capability in Connected Aircraft and avionics. You will apply concepts related to avionics, data links, communications coverage/bandwidth/resiliency, and security/authentication to enable richer, more reliable operational data exchange for higher airspace and other new entrant operations. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on developing, assessing, and translating operational concepts into implementable requirements, interfaces, data flows, and integration/test approaches, especially where automation systems, surveillance/comms, and information services intersect. You may support analysis and engineering deliverables such as: • Cooperative area / special activity airspace concepts (processes, roles, decision timelines, stakeholder notifications) • Cooperative area interactions with ATC and service transfers (supporting needs, surveillance/comms considerations) • Machine-to-machine data pathways and datasets (operator ↔ information services ↔ FAA) • Connected Aircraft applicability to higher airspace operations • Data exchange, authentication/authorization, resiliency, and operational suitability for safety-related services • Integration considerations for space launch/reentry, higher airspace operations, UAS/UTM, and UAM (automation and infrastructure impacts) Qualifications: • U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance. • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or similar. • 7+ years of relevant experience in one or more of: ATM/ATC automation, NAS systems, aviation data services, surveillance/comms integration, safety-critical systems engineering. • Extensive knowledge of FAA automation and adjacent NAS services (e.g., ERAM, STARS, TFMS, TBFM, etc.) • Extensive knowledge with SWIM-style information exchange patterns (service interfaces, governance, data models) and/or connected aircraft data flows.· • Demonstrated experience producing high-quality requirements, interfaces, and technical documentation. • Experience applying Connected Aircraft concepts and avionics/equipage considerations (how aircraft connectivity and avionics capabilities enable/limit operational data exchange and coordination). • Experience directly engaging with customers and government/prime stakeholders. • Strong proficiency with common tools (Word/PowerPoint/Excel) and collaboration platforms (Teams/SharePoint). • Extremely strong written/verbal communication skills Desired Qualifications: • Strong familiarity with avionics communications options (e.g., data link concepts, SATCOM/terrestrial tradeoffs, operational communications constraints), including implications for timeliness, resiliency, and service dependencies. • Exposure to new entrant integration domains: space launch/reentry, higher airspace/HATM, UTM/UAS, UAM concepts and ecosystem. • Experience with digital engineering / MBSE methods or tools (e.g., SysML, DOORS, Cameo, Enterprise Architect). • Experience supporting modernization programs with integration, deployment, sustainment, or test & evaluation constraints • Knowledge of traffic flow management • Knowledge of NAS Enterprise Architecture and info-centric NAS initiatives • Experience with project management tools Work Location Type: Remote Travel: Limited travel may be required, but not expected to be more than 10-20% ASI is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, protected veteran status, or disability status. Job Type: Full-time Pay: $120,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year Benefits: • 401(k) • Dental insurance • Health insurance • Paid time off Education: • Bachelor's (Required) Experience: • Air Traffic Management Automation: 2 years (Required) Work Location: Remote
