Description of Work This position will report directly to the Communications Director and will be responsible for management and oversight of the media relations function - supervising 4 PIOs (Information and Communications Specialists III) serving the areas of Prisons/Institutions. Advises managers and leadership on news media related issues. Preps employees for media interviews. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences This position will report directly to the Communications Director and will be responsible for management and oversight of the media relations function - supervising 4 PIOs (Information and Communications Specialists III) serving the areas of Prisons/Institutions. Community Supervision, Reentry/Rehabilitation and Internal Communications. Ensures accurate and timely responses are provided to news media inquiries. Advises managers and leadership on news media related issues. Preps employees for media interviews. Media Relations: 40 percent Supervises four public information officers. Provides leadership to the development and implementation of the Department’s systemwide offender newspaper program. Coordinates offender newspaper program efforts with Institutions senior management team as well as facility specific management throughout the state. Provides oversight to Department and Division-level newsletters to ensure consistency and quality standards as determined by Department Leadership. Plans, writes, and edits agency publications on educational, informational, and promotional subject matter. Provides regular updates to Communications Director on status of key projects. Internal Communications- 20 percent Supervise the PIO managing internal communications for a statewide staff of nearly 15,000 people. Provides support to the Department’s Internal Communications Officer in the development of internal communications. Ensures accuracy, proper formatting and scheduling of daily informational emails to NCDAC staff, updates to internal Sharepoint website and any other internal communications tools the agency may employ. Management and administration – 20 percent Supervises four employees, conducting required performance plans and reviews. Approves time sheets and time off requests. Promotes training and staff development of supervised employees. Strategic Planning - 5 percent Works with the Communications Director to maintain the department’s Communications Plan, a strategic document which sets the roadmap for Communications Office priorities. Duties performed in support of the Communications Plan are coordinated with other DAC Leadership team members to include the Strategic Management Director. Executive Communications - 5 percent Coordinates with Department leadership on the process to develop, review, and finalize communication products to be issued by the Office of the Governor, to include (but not limited to) Executive Orders and Proclamations. Public Records - 5 percent Provides support to the department’s Public Records Lead on an as needed basis, to include researching and gathering requested records. Special Projects - 5 percent Performs additional duties and supports additional projects and initiatives as determined by the communications director and department management.
