Full Description

A hybrid food hall and grocer is looking for a Beverage Director to join their team in the Greater Detroit Metro Area. The ideal candidate has a service-oriented mindset, strong customer service skills, expertise with Japanese alcoholic beverages, in particular whisky, sake, shochu, etc., and proven experience navigating the import processes for alcoholic beverages. This is a full-time, direct-hire position that offers a competitive salary and an outstanding benefits package including health, dental, vision, and 401(k) matching. Japanese Beverage Director Responsibilities: • Leverage in-depth industry expertise within the food & beverage industry to identify trends and generate strategic plans for new business development • Oversee importing of alcoholic beverages from Japan (whisky, sake, shochu, etc.) and address any potential issues during the process (taxes, tariffs, other fees, etc.) • Research new products and develop cost/benefit analyses • Develop and ensure effective implementation of any policies specific to alcoholic beverage department • Oversee implementation of effective orientation, training, and other professional development programs • Monitor purchasing, and review received inventory to ensure sufficient quantity, quality, and correct cost of products • Ensure departmental adherence to all legal requirements related to wage and hour, federal/state/local laws pertaining to alcoholic beverages • Develop and review drink/cocktail menus, wine lists, and promotional programs • Manage long-term staffing needs of the alcohol department • Oversight of safety, sanitation, and other relevant programs • Develop an annual operating budget • Other duties as required Japanese Beverage Director Requirements: • Strong background in alcoholic beverage industry, specifically Japanese imports • In-depth knowledge of different aspects of alcoholic beverages including classifications, quality, etc. • Ability to offer informed suggestions for suitable pairings of alcoholic drinks with food • 5-7 years’ management experience in restaurant, bar, or other hospitality industry • Four year degree in Business Administration or Hospitality or comparable level of education and applied experience • Experience with US-based operations of Japanese brands • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision • This position is in a mixed restaurant/retail work environment. While performing the duties of this job you may be required to intermittently sit, stand, walk, lift up to 20 pounds, lift in excess of 20 pounds with a lift assist, climb stairs, use hands to handle or feel parts/equipment, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend at the waist, talk and hear. You may also be required to use close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
