Position Summary The Director of Internal Communications is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive strategy to effectively reach both field and corporate employees across the organization’s geographic footprint. This leader partners closely with senior leaders and stakeholders, leveraging various communication tools and channels to ensure all internal messaging is clear, consistent, and aligned with company goals, values, and culture. Managing a team of communications specialists, the Director delivers impactful content and champions employee engagement initiatives to strengthen the company’s culture. Success in this role is demonstrated by effective, engaging communications and a positive workplace environment that supports business objectives and fosters transparency and collaboration. Key Responsibilities Develops and implements a comprehensive internal communications strategy that aligns messaging, channels, and tactics with business objectives, company culture, and values. Builds, leads, and mentors a high-performing communications team, overseeing recruitment, training, and professional development to ensure clarity, consistency, and impactful content delivery. Creates and distributes compelling content across new and existing channels to effectively reach both corporate and field employees enterprise-wide. Partners with senior leaders to ensure messaging supports business goals and culture, while collaborating cross-functionally within Corporate Communications to deliver cohesive internal and external communications. Administers internal communication platforms and tools to ensure reliability and accessibility for all employees. Continuously evaluates and enhances communication tools to maximize usability and alignment with organizational needs. Monitors and analyzes communications effectiveness using feedback and data, driving improvements such as increased engagement rates and streamlined information flow based on actionable insights. Designs and promotes employee engagement programs that foster a positive culture and demonstrate measurable success in supporting business objectives. Maintains a strategic content calendar to ensure communications remain timely, relevant, and responsive to organizational priorities. Promotes a collaborative and respectful work environment, modeling effective work practices and teamwork. Serves as part of Duke Energy’s crisis communications team and participates in storm/emergency response. Basic/Required Qualifications Bachelors degree AND 10 years minimum required related experience In lieu of degree and experience listed above, High School/GED AND 14 years minimum required related experience Preferred Qualifications BA/BS degree required. 10+ years of experience in internal communications, corporate communications, or a related field; experience within the energy, utilities, or technology sectors strongly preferred. 5+ years of experience managing a communications team, ideally within a large, matrixed organization. Excellent writing and editing skills, with proven ability to convey complex information clearly; experience using Smart Brevity communication style a plus. Strong project management skills, with a track record of successfully managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. Demonstrated expertise in content creation and delivery across a variety of channels, including intranet, email, and multimedia platforms. Ability to collaborate effectively with key stakeholders at all levels, including senior leaders, and to influence cross-functional teams toward common goals. Experience administering and maintaining internal communication tools (e.g., internal email software, intranet); familiarity with digital communication platforms in large organizations is a plus. Demonstrated adaptability and openness to change in a fast-paced environment. Commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace culture and modeling respectful, collaborative work practices. Proactive leadership style, with strong interpersonal skills and a focus on mentorship and team development. Working Conditions Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period.
