As part of the EASS eCMS program supporting modernization and sustainment of VA acquisition systems, the Senior Database Administrator manages, maintains, secures, and optimizes enterprise SQL Server database environments supporting critical application functions. This role ensures the reliability, integrity, availability, and performance of SQL Server across development, test, staging, and production tiers, and collaborates closely with developers, data engineers, system administrators, and security teams to support operational needs and modernization efforts. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • Install, configure, maintain, and secure SQL Server instances across multiple environments. • Monitor and optimize database performance, including tuning, indexing strategies, and resource management. • Implement and manage backup/restore processes, retention policies, and disaster recovery procedures. • Support database patching, upgrades, replication, and environment refreshes. • Collaborate with developers to tune queries, optimize stored procedures, and improve data access performance. • Ensure system integrity through data validations, constraints, and audit controls. • Troubleshoot database-related issues including deadlocks, performance bottlenecks, failed jobs, and connectivity failures. • Maintain detailed database documentation including schema designs, configuration settings, maintenance plans, and operational procedures. • Support reporting, analytics, and integration needs with optimized database structures. • Participate in change management activities to assess database impacts for releases. • Ensure compliance with security standards including encryption, permissions, and audit trails. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: • Minimum of eight (8) years of SQL Server database administration experience. • Expertise with installation, configuration, optimization, and performance tuning. • Experience with high availability, disaster recovery, and backup strategies. • Ability to identify and troubleshoot performance or stability issues. • Strong SQL development skills including stored procedures and indexing. • Strong documentation and analytical skills. • Experience collaborating with development, analytics, security, and infrastructure teams. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS DESIRED: • Experience working with Federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs. • Experience supporting hybrid or cloud-hosted SQL Server deployments. • Familiarity with SSRS, SSIS, or enterprise data warehouse components. • Experience with modernization or database refactoring efforts. • Experience working in environments built on Azure, .NET, SQL Server, IIS, and related VA enterprise technologies. EDUCATION: • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience. CLEARANCE: • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
