Position / Title: Director of Plant Operations Bargaining Unit: ADM Department/Location: Plant Operations Calendar Days: 260 Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Operations JD Revision Date: 11/26/2025 Supervises: Assistant Director of Operations and Maintenance, Assistant Director of Planning and Systems Function / Position Summary The primary purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the district’s facilities and operations, ensuring a safe, functional, and welcoming environment that supports teaching, learning, and community use. This role oversees district-wide facilities, maintenance, capital projects, and compliance with safety standards. It directs renovation and construction projects, manages facility rentals, and establishes operational standards to maximize efficiency, safety, and quality. The position also manages staffing, budgets, and resources to ensure Plant Operations delivers cost-effective, high-quality services across the district. Job Duties / Responsibilities • Directs the Plant Operations Department in accordance with district policies, local, state, and federal regulations. • Develops, manages, and monitors the department budget, ensuring adherence to established financial parameters. • Oversees long-range capital funding programs and directs capital projects, remodeling, and renovation projects. • Leads the district’s energy conservation initiatives and sustainability programs. • Develops and implements district-wide maintenance and preventative maintenance plans for facilities and equipment. • Directs the procurement of equipment, building systems, contract services, and professional consultant services. • Establishes departmental goals, objectives, priorities, and schedules to meet district needs. • Provides administrative and technical supervision to department staff, including participation in collective bargaining, labor management, and grievance processes. • Manages the Building Access and Security Control Office (BASCO) and oversees facility access and security systems. • Oversees internal and external facility rentals and intergovernmental agreements. • Serves as the administrative lead for the Welcome Center, coordinating and supporting all operational areas. • Represents Plant Operations at Board of Education meetings and presents proposals for review and approval. • Coordinates Regional Office of Education inspections, Health and Life Safety inspections, Temporary Facilities inspections and reporting processes. • Leads emergency response planning and communication efforts as required. • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Operations. Education • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, administration, or architectural engineering preferred. • Minimum of five years of experience in physical plant operations, maintenance, construction, or equivalent experience in a related field. • Minimum of three years of experience at the supervisory or management level. • CPMM and/or CPS certification preferred. • Experience with the Illinois School Code, life safety procedures, and mandates from the State Board of Education. Experience / Knowledge • Substantial background in school building/business administration, engineering, building construction management, facility management, and personnel management. • A thorough knowledge of mechanical and electrical building systems and computer-based energy management systems. • Understanding of school budgeting and computer programming. • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form and work with contacts at all levels of the organization, including the Board of Education, Superintendent, assistant superintendents, building principals, departmental staff, directors of various programs, and area superintendents. • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form and work with contacts outside of the district, including contractual service companies, consultants, manufacturers of products used within the district building, and federal and state agencies. Physical Demands • Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment. • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. with proper technique. Terms of Employment • This position has a 12-month work year. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education. • The salary range for this position is $118,483.00 - $177,725.00. Our typical practice is to hire in between the minimum and midpoint ($148,104.00).
