Job Summary The Charge Entry & Coding Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and performance of the charge entry and coding team across all practices and specialties. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant charge capture and coding for comprehensive ophthalmology, cataract, glaucoma, cornea, retina, refractive, optometry, and ASC services. The Team Lead serves as the first point of contact for coding, documentation, and workflow issues and supports quality assurance, training, and performance optimization across the department. Any issues outside the scope of this role will be escalated to the Charge Entry & Coding Manager. What You Will Be Working On Performance • Oversee daily workflows for charge entry, coding, and modifier usage to ensure accuracy and timeliness. • Assign and balance workloads to meet departmental productivity, turnaround time (TAT), and accuracy goals. • Monitor coding accuracy, charge lag, and payer-related coding edits; escalate trends to management. • Perform routine chart and charge audits to ensure compliance with CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10, NCCI edits, and payer rules. • Maintain current knowledge of payer policies, LCD/NCD changes, and ophthalmology coding updates. • Develop and maintain SOPs, tip sheets, coding guides, and training materials to support team education and consistency. • Support new-hire onboarding and ongoing staff development for coding, charge workflows, and system use. Leadership and Management • Lead and promote the integration of standardized charge entry and coding processes across the organization. • Enforce workflow processes that support departmental KPIs and partner with leadership to enhance performance metrics. • Provide coaching, mentorship, and real-time support to staff to improve quality, productivity, and competency. • Ensure cross-coverage and continuity of operations for all coding and charge entry functions. Communication and Working Relationships • Work cross-functionally to develop and manage an efficient and effective collection process. • Respond to inquiries from leadership, Operations, staff, or physicians in a timely and appropriate manner. • Share metric performance with RCM leadership to support continuous process improvement. • Coordinate communication to assigned staff regarding productivity standards, quality standards, policies, procedures, and corporate requirements. Expertise • Maintain a strong understanding of ophthalmology coding guidelines, payer rules, regulatory requirements, and documentation standards. • Identify coding and documentation risks and collaborate with leadership to implement mitigation strategies. • Stay updated on clinical, regulatory, and payer changes impacting ophthalmology services, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial plans. Other • Perform other duties as assigned. Experience And Knowledge • 1+ years of supervision, team lead, or trainer experience within charge entry, ophthalmology coding, or related revenue cycle roles. • Strong knowledge of CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10, payer medical policies, and ophthalmology coding rules. • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism. • Demonstrated judgment, leadership capabilities, and ability to prioritize. Education And Skills • High school diploma required; Bachelor's degree in Health Administration, Business, or related field preferred. • Proficient in Microsoft Office with strong Excel skills. • Experience with Nextech, Allscripts, HST, PayerPath, or similar PM/EHR systems preferred.
