JOB TITLE: DEPUTY DIRECTOR GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS Department: Government Affairs Date: December 2025 Reports to: Director of Government Affairs FLSA: Exempt Position Summary: Serves as a key liaison to Capitol Hill and the Administration. Manages the day-to-day activities of departmental staff. Advocates on behalf of the IAFF, shepherding priorities through the legislative and regulatory processes. Develops and maintains relationships with Congressional staff and organizations that have similar legislative and regulatory interests. Develops, tracks, and analyzes legislation and regulations. Researches issues and develops policy positions in support of the mission of the IAFF. Responsibilities: Develops and implements, in conjunction with the Director, the IAFF federal governmental affairs agenda Shepherds IAFF priorities through the legislative and regulatory process Engages in direct lobbying on Capitol Hill and to the Administration Tracks and analyzes legislation, develops legislative initiatives, determines IAFF positions and priorities on various legislative issues, and lobbies Members of Congress, the Administration, and their staffs to achieve the IAFF’s priorities Authors legislation, amendments, and related materials to advance IAFF positions and priorities Writes Congressional testimony, letters to Members of Congress, talking points, and other materials to support the IAFF’s lobbying efforts Represents the IAFF in coalitions and coordinates legislative efforts with other organizations and individuals Collaborates with other IAFF Divisions to identify solutions for policy problems affecting the IAFF and its affiliates Prepares and helps conduct the annual IAFF Legislative Conference, including producing written materials, coordinating speakers, conducting presentations, and supporting IAFF members in lobbying efforts Represents the Government Affairs Department at IAFF events, including conducting presentations Provides information to, and for, IAFF Members in support of grassroots lobbying efforts and in response to requests for information Writes content for the IAFF website, magazine, and other publications Performs other duties as required to support the Department and its mission Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills Deep understanding of the federal legislative process Excellent ability to read, write, and analyze legislation and regulations Ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to audiences of varying degrees of familiarity and understanding Ability to write clearly and concisely in varying forms of communication, including letters, articles, and congressional testimony Ability to act independently and handle politically sensitive information in a professional manner Ability to conduct comprehensive policy research Proficient, or ability to become proficient, in relevant technical software, including software tailored for the legislative process Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Minimum of 5 years of related experience Must have a background in public policy and an in-depth understanding of the federal legislative process
