Backend Software Engineer: Python Hourly Contract | Remote | $80–$120 per hour About the Role Mercor is hiring experienced Python Engineers to support a range of high-impact research collaborations with leading AI labs. In this role, you will contribute to improving AI systems by extending and validating coding benchmarks that reflect real-world software development across diverse languages and technical domains. This is a unique opportunity to apply your engineering expertise toward shaping the next generation of intelligent systems. Key Responsibilities • Develop and validate Python-based coding benchmarks by curating issues, solutions, and tests from real-world repositories • Ensure benchmark tasks include thorough unit and integration tests for solution verification • Maintain consistency, scalability, and reliability across benchmark task distributions • Provide structured feedback on the clarity, quality, and correctness of solutions • Debug, optimize, and document benchmark code for reproducibility and robustness Ideal Qualifications • 3–10 years of experience as a backend engineer, ML engineer, or applied data scientist • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field • Strong proficiency in Python • Experience with debugging, testing, validation, and software best practices • Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail Project Timeline • Start Date: Immediate • Duration: 1 month • Commitment: Part-time (15–20 hours/week) • Schedule: Fully remote, asynchronous, flexible hours Compensation & Contract • $80/hour plus lucrative bonuses per approved task • (Most tasks take ~1 hour; median effective earnings ≈ $200/hr) • Independent contractor engagement • Daily payments via Stripe Connect Application & Onboarding Process • Upload your resume • Complete a short 15-minute AI interview regarding experience and interest • Take a brief assessment evaluating real-world coding ability and debugging approach • Receive follow-up communication with next steps and onboarding instructions ⚡ PS: Mercor reviews applications daily.
