Job Title: Medical Billing Specialist Organization: The Berkeley Therapy Institute 1749 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, Berkeley, CA 94709 Reports To: Practice Manager Employment Status: Fulltime, 40 hours per week FSLA Status: Exempt Website: www.bti.org The Berkeley Therapy Institute is a busy, thriving, non-profit mental health practice located in downtown Berkeley, CA, serving our community since 1972. BTI’s clinical staff is comprised currently of 21 psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and MFTs. We also provide education and training to psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows. Position Summary Berkeley Therapy Institute is seeking an experienced Medical Billing Specialist, who is well versed in all aspects of the revenue cycle management process. This is an opportunity to take charge of the entire billing and collections function for this practice. Successful and high rate of collections will be key to this position’s success. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Initiate, post, track, and follow all billing submissions to completion. Verify completeness and accuracy of all claims prior to submission. Ensure all claims are generated daily and submitted with a goal of zero errors. Process payments. Run aging reports and research, correct, appeal or re-bill claims – in order to achieve high rate of successful collections. Research and follow up through phone calls, investigative work, and rebilling to assure claims are resolved in a timely manner. Initiate written appeals for contract discrepancies and underpayments. Handle all levels of questions from insurance companies, governmental agencies, clinicians, and patients; identify and resolve patient billing questions. Acquire expert knowledge of payor guidelines and payment methodologies. Upon request, pull documentation and organize for all internal and external audits. Flexibility and initiative in taking on new work assignments and incorporating new processes. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information. Weekly status update/report to Practice Manager. Other assignments as directed by Practice Manager. Required Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of experience in medical insurance billing required. Certificate in Medical Billing (preferred, but not required). Experience using EMR billing software required; experience with InSync a plus. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Strong written and verbal communication skills; communication with patients in an empathetic and professional manner required. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to exercise independent judgement and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail. Compensation Salary range $75,000 - $80,000, commensurate with experience.
